As soon as I saw this little green glass bird bath I fell in love with it. I have to say right off though, that this is really not for birds to bathe in but more for them to get a drink.
This really is a tiny bird bath. I almost would not call it a bath at all, it is more of a water dish for birds. There are two parts to it. An S hook that hangs about 5.5 inches and then a green clear glass leaf shaped dish is attached inside a metal ring that is black in color like the S hook. The ring is 8″ across, and there is a metal loop at the top of the birdbath assembly ring and one below. You can use the S hook or not depending on what you are hanging it from. The S hook is really good if you are hanging it from a tree since the S hook will accommodate a larger branch. If you are hanging from a hook on your deck like I am, you may want to leave the S hook out depending how how far down you want the birdbath to hang.
The actual dish is made of clear green glass with a random color pattern to it. The glass dish holds about a cup of water and has the metal attached to it permanently but it can be screwed on or off the metal ring with a screw at the bottom. The Glass Bath measures 7.5″ x 6″ and is about 3″ deep. The actual bowl in the leaf is round where it starts to dip down and is 4″ wide at that point. The dish will hold about a cup of water. The entire bird bath with all metal parts is 10″ long and if you are using the S Hook it will hang down 15.5″
When I was ordering this on Amazon, I noticed that besides green, it also comes in yellow and blue.
Packaging and Assembly
The Green Glass bird bath came well packaged in foam and when you open it up you will see that you have to screw the glass bowl on to the metal ring. When I screwed it on the ring on the bottom assembly did not seem to match perfectly with the way the ring on the top of the assembly was positioned. I guess this is not that big a deal but I am a bit picky and wished that they matched up perfectly. The truth is that once I had it up I no longer noticed this difference.
Placement: I hung our bird water dish on a hook off our deck. There are actually two arms on the hook we have. One I have a bird feeder on and so I put the water on the other one. At first none of the birds were noticing the bath so I switched positions and removed the S hook so that both the feeder and the bath were at the same level. It has been really wet here so there is no water shortage right now but I have now noticed some birds checking out the water. I like how the smaller birds can hang on to the ring or perch on the sides of the leaf.
Cleaning: To keep the bird bath clean I bring out a cup of water and then dump out the old water and wipe out the bowl before putting more water in. I do this daily because the birds bring seeds from the feeder into the water and over time it can turn the water bad and then your birds will not touch it. I like that this is so close to my deck. I think if this was out in the garden somewhere, although it would still look sweet, I am not sure I would get out to keep it full and cleaned daily.
What the birds think: From the look of it the birds seem very happy with this addition. They not only enjoy getting a drink from it but the large ring serves as a stopping spot for many birds before they move on to get some food from the bird feeder that I have placed beside this. I am sure when the weather changes mid summer and there is not much water around the birds will really appreciate being able to get a nice fresh drink.
Using as a bird feeder: If you were thinking about getting this and using it as a bird feeder I would not recommend it, because there is no drainage and if it rained you would have a real mess. I guess if you were devoted to daily cleaning you could do it, but I would stick with a feeder with drainage.
Final thoughts and rating
I am very happy with my purchase and the only thing I would change is to have the top metal ring match up perfectly in position with the bottom metal ring. This is not a big deal and would not have stopped me from purchasing it but I will take one star off for it. Other than that I love this little water dish and feel I will have it for years to come.
