When most people start working as a freelancer they like to focus in one area, writing, transcribing, editing, and so on. I did the same thing but I began to question if this was the right approach and what I found out surprised me.
I began my freelancing career with transcribing, I was enthusiastic, I thought this was it; this was how I was going to earn a living from home. Then one day I logged into the website I worked for only to find out I had no work available. Now what am I going to do I thought. I couldn’t just sit and waste the day earning no income, so I began thinking about other things I was good at. I can write was the first thing that came to my mind, so I began searching for websites that I could write for. A few days later came writers block, I had written so much I didn’t want to write that day so again I began thinking what else can I do. I began expanding my freelance services every few days realizing that I had a lot of talent going to waste and if I was going to become successful at working from home as a freelancer I needed to put these talents to work for me.
There are so many things you can do as a freelancer from running a company’s Facebook page to working as a virtual assistant. You must be multi-talented, you must be able to provide more than one kind of service to clients, because there are millions of people out there working on the same types of jobs you are. You are in competition with millions of workers and many of them will do the same work you will do for a very small price.
So how do you ensure your success? Well, first of all you must make sure you do not have all of your eggs in one basket as they say. Make sure you have several sources that you can pull from. So if you are transcribing, make sure you have several sites you are transcribing for, if you can do more than one thing, such as copy typing or answering phones for a phone service, put those talents to use as well.
When there are people out there offering to do the same work you are doing but at a much lower cost, how can you compete with them? What I have found is that if you provide quality work to your clients, they will give you great feedback; this encourages other clients to give you a shot. Now while you won’t get every job you apply for, you will begin getting some which will in effect lead you to getting more and more work as long as you provide quality work for your client.
Working as a freelancer is not the easiest job in the world, but it doesn’t have to be the hardest either. You will get out of it what you put into it, if you don’t aim to please your clients, you will have no clients. The number one way to ensure that you are successful as a freelancer is to ensure no matter what that your clients are happy.
How do you make your clients happy? A happy client is a client who has received quality work in a timely manner and who did not have to over pay for the services. You will see people bidding as low as possible on a job but here’s the thing, most clients don’t go for the lowest bidder, they go for the middle ground. They just like you and I know you get what you pay for. When you provide the client with the work that they want done on time, they are very happy which will lead to good feedback and potentially more work from that client in the future.
In short, the way to ensure your success as a freelancer is to make sure you have several different companies you can work for. Use all of your talents to earn as much money as you can, and provide quality work for each and every one of your clients.
