Des Moines has plenty of free and cheap activities to keep families busy, and Earth Day is no different. But most of the activities don’t actually happen on Earth Day, which is April 22. Check the dates on these events before you head out to celebrate the environment.
Earth Day in the Junction
The Valley Junction district of West Des Moines hosts its annual Earth Day in the Junction on Sunday, April 6, 2014. Highlights include a 5K run/walk at 9:00 AM, kids’ fun run at 10:00 AM, and live music from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Throughout the day, you can visit sponsor booths from local businesses and enjoy entertainment.
If you own a hybrid vehicle, check out the hybrid mileage challenge at 10:30 AM. Participants drive a 25-mile route in under 1 hour to see who can get the best gas mileage. Toyota of Des Moines is offering prizes for the top 3 finishers. Plus you get a $25 gas card just for participating.
Downtown Earth Day Tour
The Science Center of Iowa and the Greater Des Moines Botanical Center are teaming up for the Downtown Earth Day Tour on Saturday, April 19, 2014, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Each location has a special activity for families included in the normal admission. Bring a glass or plastic bottle to the Botanical Center to make a terrarium with your family.
The Science Center admission is free for kids under 2, $7 for kids 2 to 12, and $11 for adults 13 and up. The Botanical Center is free for children 3 and under, $3 for kids 4 to 17, and $5 for adults. Members get in free at both locations.
The groups encourage participants to take the Principal Riverwalk and trails to get from one to the other. As a bonus, the Science Center will give you $1 off your admission if you how up with your bike helmet or a bus ticket.
While you’re downtown, head over to the East Village for the Recycle Revolution. This event is also on Saturday, April 19, 2014, and lasts from 12:00 PM to 12:00 AM. The goal is to raise awareness about recycling in a block party-style event that doesn’t produce any waste. You’ll find locally sources food and eco-art as you wander through the vendors. This portion of the event is free.
From 6:00 PM to 12:00 AM, you can head to Wooly’s for live music. Tickets for the concert are $15 if you buy in advance or $20 at the door. For $50, you get a VIP ticket that includes food, beverages, raffle tickets and more.
Earth Day Trash Bash 2014
The city of Des Moines is once again hosting the Earth Day Trash Bash — the largest volunteer effort for Earth Day in Iowa. This event is what Earth Day is all about. Teams clean up the area at one of several assigned locations throughout the metro.
The 2014 event takes place on Friday, April 25 with a rain date of April 28. Teams meet at Capital Square from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM for the kick-off event, where volunteers will enjoy music, food and activities. Teams receive information on their work location and travel there from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM. Once at the site, volunteers are briefed on safety issues and given necessary supplies. Work continues until 5:00 PM.
