Nintendo is poised for a comeback, and they certainly stole the show at the E3 2014 Expo. Nintendo has kind of fallen down a little bit. They’ve got the Wii U, which is a fine system, but the games just weren’t there. A lot of pressure has been on them lately with their latest games in order to desperately boost sales of their Wii U system.
These are games such as Super Smash Bros, which is probably their really big holiday release. So the Wii U has been out for about 18 months and sold 6.17 million units world wide. Compare that to the PlayStation 4, which only debuted about eight months ago, and it has already sold more than 7 million units. As for Xbox, they say about 5 million shipped, not sold, but shipped to retailers, and 3 million units sold. So Nintendo needs to come back to stay in these console wars and this game looks very promising.
There’s another game for Nintendo that made the weights here at E3, called Splatoon. That’s coming out early next year in 2015. That is really a lot of fun. It’s a cartoon shooter where you’re spraying paint. It’s a multi-player game. So there’s a lot of buzz at E3 about that game from Nintendo as well. There’s also the highly acclaimed Mario Kart 8, recently released, that has brought new life into the Wii U. It features new characters like the Koopas, Pink Gold Peach, and Baby Rosalina, as well as gameplay features like anti-gravity and the addition of ATVs. So, yes, the Wii U is a nice system, but you’ve got to have the games to back it up.
Now this is a topic that we as gamers or people who like to play or parents who are going to buy the games for our kids, are interested in. What does the future hold? Are we going to keep buying discs? Or are we just going to download every game?
Well, there’s a couple of things are on the horizon. Games are going digital. The next step, is instead of buying discs, you’ll be downloading the game digitally. After that, then the next stage will be playing them in the cloud, as well call it, where it’s kind of like Netflix where you’ll have a selection of games that you can play on demand and they’ll load really quickly. PlayStation Now is playing around with that from Sony. Another thing you can expect next year is virtual reality helmets. There’s a couple of companies working on it. Oculus Rift was recently purchased by Facebook for a couple of billion dollars. Sony recently showed off Project Morpheus, which is a headset plugged into the PS4 that really gives you a 360 degree view of the action, with head tracking and facial audio. You really feel like you are in the middle of the game because everywhere you look, it’s the virtual world.
