My Partner and I enjoyed an evening listening to several members of the “Duck Dynasty” clan discuss their lives and the show. This lovely event, Dynasty Forever, was hosted by Northland Christian School in Houston, Texas at Champion Forest Baptist Church. Florence and I purchased the less costly tickets and were seated in the second floor balcony of the massive church. The tickets were raising money for the school and cost anywhere from $35 to $200.
“Duck Dynasty” , in recent months, has suffered record low ratings. It has been speculated that these low ratings were due to patriarch Phil Robertson, who gave an interview with GQ magazine condemning homosexuality. It was a shame to see such a popular show hit hard by one misguided opinion.
Though Phil may not be accepting sometimes, the family up on stage tonight seemed very nice and welcoming. My partner and I did not once feel threatened or unwelcome at the Baptist church the event was hosted in. Overall, it was a great evening for both of us even though my partner Florence is not as big of a fan of the show as I am.
Alan, the beardless brother, was the first on the stage. He received the honor of introducing the family. He chose to describe his brothers as Labrador dogs. The hunting black labs are his dad and his brother Jase. They eat and breathe hunting. According to Willie, Jase failed the two classes he took in college, golf and first-aid, because he skipped half the classes. Unfortunately, hunting season started while classes were still going on.
The friendly yellow lab represents him and his brother Jep, “the sister they never had.” He backs up this point by mentioning Jep is the only one of them that will “have hair products” coming out soon. Lastly, Willy is the kooky chocolate lab because you never know which type of dog you’re going to get with those. He ended with a joke saying Uncle Si is more like a meth lab.
Joking aside, Uncle Si is an incredible man. He is a dedicated citizen to his country. He spent 24 ½ years in the US armed forces. He and Alan visited the troops at Ft. Lewis in Washington, Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, and Ft. Hood in Texas. Alan said Si seemed like he was back in his Nam days the way he was joking with the commanders on the bases. Si was a very handsome man in his day. Maybe that is why he is getting so many marriage proposals from Alabama.
Speaking of Alabama, young Sadie has a boyfriend there. John Luke jokingly calls him a “coward” while their father admits he never met the boy but will be soon. John Luke on the other hand is dating someone closer to home. He finds his ladies among Sadie’s closest friends. She often likes to set him up with her friends. Who knows now that he is 18, maybe he will be proposing to the girl like his father did when he was 18?
Willy was only 18 when he asked 17 year old Korie to marry him and he has “been raising her ever since”. He first asked her to marry him by tapping the engagement ring to the inside of a bowling shoe. At the time, Willie “wanted to be a professional bowler.” Of course his wife was quick to point out that he also wanted to be a ‘professional scrabble player’ not to long ago. Willie thought the idea to put the ring in the bowling shoes was brilliant. Unfortunately, Korie’s response was “he is very romantic…normally.”
Willy was surprisingly just as funny in person as he is on the show. The man was throwing zinger after zinger. The crowd just couldn’t stop laughing. He seemed like a very genuine man who cared a lot about his family as well as the business.
The kids, Sadie and John Luke, had the crowd laughing as much as their father. Sadie was quick to tell everyone how much better she is at basketball than her brother. At this, Willie mentions what his wife said earlier that day, “So when does basketball season start?” (Please note that we are in the middle of March Madness).
Korie and Willie were asked how they came up with the name John Luke. At first, Korie blurted out, “Willie loves star wars!” The crowd roared with laughter as Willie covered his face in embarrassment. “He went to a star trek convention in college.” Willie finally got a hold of another microphone and clarifies that it was only “star trek not star wars.” Korie just giggles saying that John Luke actually came from a family name on her side of the family, but Willie liked it because he thought it sounded like “Jean Luc on Star Trek.” Willie had no comment on that statement.
Overall it was a great night. Anyone who is watched the season five finale should look closely when Willie goes down pretty hard on the ground at one point near the end. Apparently Willie hurt his ankle, but he played it off until later when he texted a member of crew that he broke his ankle in three places and would have to be off of it for three months. He was just joking. When he checked back an hour later his phone had hundreds of messages on it. He just sent a simple text back to the person he originally sent the text to saying ‘just kidding’.
Also, look for more “Duck Dynasty” products coming soon. Sadie is producing her own line of prom dresses. Alan and his wife Lisa have a marriage book. The women of Duck Commander are writing their own book about being married to the Robertson men. Rebecca Robertson will have her own online clothing store soon. Willie and Korie are in a movie called “God’s Not Dead.” On the show next season expect even more fun from the Robertson boys because all of Phil’s sons are purchasing houses on the same street. Oh the fun that will be had between all of them!
