Whether you’re in the city, the suburbs or the country, bugging in will generally give you a better chance of survival due to the fact that you do not have to put yourself in danger getting to a certain location. If you decide to bug in, you will have many tactical advantages knowing your way around the local area, knowing the locals, and having maps to your area readily available.
The first and most important thing you must take into consideration is the human wave theory. Basically when disaster strikes 90% of the population will be trying to get out of the urban population centers. Depending on where you live this can be good and bad. For people in the city this is extremely bad, there may be blackouts and rampant riots and civil disorder. Survivability in these urban centers is very unpredictable and extremely dangerous. For those that are in rural areas, the biggest worry is all of the population from the urban centers dispersing into the rural areas in search of food and water. You may encounter groups of up to 30 people all armed with pistols or other weapons accessible to them in the city. Make sure that you have sufficient fire arms and weapon systems with enough bodies behind them to operate them to ensure your safety from these groups.
Defense after disaster is definitely the most important key aspect you must master if you plan on making an effective bug in plan. The homestead is the perfect location, in the country, with capability to build watch towers, cement walls, barbed wire fences and good firing positions. Be sure to have all of these things or at least most of them if you plan on bugging into your homestead. Watchtowers are not that difficult to build, and if you have several up with multiple people on duty, you will have no problem spotting incoming personnel or friendly people. If you are the only prepper in your neighborhood you must include your entire community. Take every single bit of food from every house that you can, every bit of water, every gun every bullet and cram it into your homestead and defend it heavily.
No one will want to take offensive operations against you if you make a good show of force by having these towers up. Cement walls are also a great thing to invest in. Try to make these walls about 8 inches to 1 foot thick to protect you from gun fire, explosives, and fire. Barbed wire will also help you secure your homestead. Invest wisely in these options. The next article(part 2) will be talking about how to sustain yourself once you have established security.
