How often do you hear about people expressing what they want their retirement years to look like? There is nothing wrong having something to look forward to as you near that stage in your life. But then, you also hear the other side of the story where people don’t live to see retirement. All those plans will never be fulfilled. I say if you have the means to cross out some of those things on your bucket-to-do-list then do it.
I know of a woman who worked many years as an elementary school teacher. While she was still employed her retired husband of many years passed. The dream they had hoped for never came to reality. Soon after she retired and went to the local university and enrolled in some art classes. She said that she always wanted to do this but never made or had the time to carry out this lifelong ambition. While I am not an art critic the things that she drew on canvas were simply mind-boggling. A few years ago she was still painting portraits of people.
Many senior citizens who are grandparents will often say that they want to be closer to their grandchildren. Start planning now to make that dream come true. No it’s not a simple matter to just get up and leave all that is familiar to you on a whim. However, you can at least start gathering information about housing options, places to worship and learn about available senior activities while you are waiting. Until that happens, make it a priority to spend as much time with your grandchildren as often as you can by planning to visit them or arranging them to come for an occasional visit to see you.
If you love the idea of traveling to different places try joining up with a senior citizen’s group where they might go on one-day or weekend outings on a bus tour that’s not too far away. You are sure to meet some very interesting people and might even make a new friend or two.
Perhaps your dream has been to learn a different language just for the fun of it. Contact your local community college or university to see if they offer what you’re looking for. It’s not unusual to see seniors going back to school in their mature years just because they can and don’t feel the pressure. It’s all about improving oneself and having fun.
So if there is something that you have just been hankering to do-Just Do It!! There’s no time like the present. And if you are still alive after retirement expand your horizons with limitless possibilities. Life awaits you.
