Building a home gym may sound like a good idea, but is it? On the surface it sounds convenient to have the treadmill and weights right there where you can always get to them, but in the end most people find that all the effort and expense was wasted. If you put some thought into it instead of running with that impulsive feeling that’s driving you towards putting a gym together, you’ll probably reach the conclusion that it’s not money well spent.
A home gym is expensive, plain and simple. It requires a lot of money to be invested both in equipment and in space, should that not be available right from the get go. Those passionate about the process and really want every detail to be just right can easily invest thousands of dollars into having their own gym. From the time they take down or put up walls to the time they fill it with the best and most up to date machines, their bank accounts have seen the exercise they wanted for themselves.
For those who can’t afford to do and buy all of those things-or are aware that they can’t afford it at least-it’s easy to put together a gym that just isn’t up to par. They make sacrifices on all sorts of things and wind up owning a home gym that they really won’t be proud of. Pride aside, they may wind up with a gym that just isn’t practical or doesn’t fit all of their needs. When it come to the gym, meeting all of your needs is more than important; it’s essential.
It’s also difficult to find the motivation to use the gym when it’s right in your basement, or wherever you happen to place it. People tend to build the gyms because they figure it’s a great way of motivating themselves to exercise more but the reverse is usually true, or at least it is in far too many circumstances. For so many reasons, the psychological drive to exercise isn’t there when the gym is at home. This is largely because when people get home their bodies are ready to shut down and relax. It’s also because when the gym is so close it’s easy to be convinced that you’ll just workout a little later.
When going to the gym involves going out to a place you have a membership, it’s a near social experience and easier to do. People go to meet their friends or feed off the energy of other people who are exercising. They also go because they know that whatever type of equipment they want will be right there waiting for them.
Home gyms also lack in the perks of the chain gyms. There are no exercise classes waiting for you in your basement nor will there be a personal trainer ensuring you’re doing everything you need to be doing, let alone doing it right.
Home gyms just don’t cut it. Use the money for a gym membership or a take up jogging instead. Either way you’ll get fit. You’ll just get fit while keeping all that space available for more important things.
