A dollar store is probably not the first place you’d think about shopping for wedding supplies, but you might be surprised at the number of quality items you can find there that will perfectly suit your needs.
Selection at these ultra discounters is catch-as-catch-can, so you may need to visit several to tap the full potential of this option. I recommend taking your shopping list to the dollar store first, then you can get any remaining items from pricier suppliers.
Plates and Flatware
My mother-in-law is a master at scoring quality dollar store items. For her younger son’s wedding, she wanted the rehearsal dinner to be classy, so instead of renting plates or using disposables, she actually purchased real ceramic plates from a dollar store. At $1 each they were no more expensive than rentals (and looked nicer). They also fit the “fiesta” theme to a “t.”
If you do decide to go disposable, the dollar store has silver tone plastic flatware, and wedding themed paper plates and napkins. You can also get wine glasses and champagne flutes in both glass and plastic.
At our wedding we used a number of dollar store finds to decorate the tables and entertain the guests. We served Mexican food at our rehearsal dinner, so we had maracas and confetti integrated into the table décor.
The reception had more of a classic white wedding theme. We had clear crystal stones, white confetti, little silver bells, and bubbles on every table. There were also small candles and individually wrapped mints – all items purchased from a dollar store.
And don’t think it was just the kids playing with the maracas and bubbles. Many adults found our whimsical decorations irresistible.
Whether you’re a bride with attendant gifts to wrap, or a guest, you’ll love the selection of wedding themed wrapping paper, gift bags, boxes, tissue and other wrapping supplies at the dollar store. You can even get a card for the happy couple.
I knew a bride who wrapped dollar store metallic foil tissue around cheap, nursery plants, and made spectacular show pieces for her wedding.
Guest Books, Garters and More
I’ve seen some amazing things at dollar stores, including: wedding books, garters, cake toppers, balloons, and thank you cards. It’s hard to imagine getting bigger ticket items like these for a dollar, but it can happen. The selection tends to be hit or miss, but if your timing is right, you can save some serious money.
