Dog Fencing to Keep Your Dog Out of Trouble

by yak max

One of the major reasons for building a fence is to keep people off your property, but another great reason is to keep your dog on your property and out of trouble. Luckily there are now many types of dog containment fence on the market that can give you peace of mind, including portable dog fencing that adds real flexibility.

The solid fence is one of the simplest dog containment systems. For this a wooden fence, using wooden fence panels, is the easiest option. The fence can be built to the height you need to contain your dog, from anything between three feet up to six feet. This can make excellent dog run fencing, a way to contain your pet easily. It can also be a great way of providing exercise fencing.

However, if a totally solid fence is not to your liking, a bamboo fence might be more suitable. This would offer enough of a barrier to stop your dog getting out, but would also offer some decoration and give a certain amount of a view outside. The other good thing about using bamboo as a dog proof fence is that this type is very easy to install, and any damage can be repaired by simply replacing the section of the fence, something that may be needed every now and again, depending on the size of the dog and how often he tries to escape!

Picket Fence for Dog Proof Fencing

The picket fence is one of the most common designs of fences, and can offer an effective dog fence. The slats need to be close enough together to stop a dog from getting out of the garden, but can do a great job while still having a decorative component. This is probably suitable for smaller dogs, though is definitely an option to be considered.

Along similar lines, the split rail fence is often not thought of as a dog containment fence, since a dog can easily escape with the standard type of fence. However, with a little modification split rails can be turned into an effective dog containment option by the addition of fabric or mesh to the fence frame. If this looks unpleasing to the eye, remember that the fence can be hidden by planting small shrubs before it.

A very effective type of fencing for dogs is the chain link fence. This is often thought of as a security fence, but it can be extremely effective for dog containment, especially for the bigger breeds which might not be contained effectively by some of the weaker fencing options. Again, this type can be hidden by allowing climbing plants to climb up the chain linking to make it look better to the eye, and it should be remembered that chain link fencing does not need to be particularly high, and can be constructed at five feet or even less.

Electronic Dog Fencing

If a fence isn’t to your liking at all, then there is always the option of installing electronic dog fencing. This is also known as invisible fencing, since it is actually a wire buried underground. When the dog attempts to cross the border of the property, a mild electric shock is administered via a collar worn by the dog. This is one of the more expensive types of dog fencing, though it is a very effective containment system and doesn’t spoil the view of the garden. Prices can range up to $300 or more for some of the better models, but as long as you want something that preserves the natural look of your garden, it can be money well spent.

As can be seen there are several very effective dog fencing options, and much depends on how fussy you are over the look of the fence and what amount of money you want to spend. The trick to remember is that even a simple standard fence can be modified in many instances to keep your dog under control.
