Dinosaurs are a popular obsession for young kids. These ancient creatures also make a good birthday party theme for the dinosaur-obsessed child. Base the party details on dinosaurs to bring the theme to life.
Send the right impression with dinosaur themed invitations. Cut the shape of a dinosaur out from colored paper. Choose your child’s favorite dinosaur as inspiration. Cut out details, such as spikes or sharp teeth, from other paper. Glue the details onto the dinosaur shape. Add the party information on the back of the dinosaur.
Another idea is to make a fossil to use as the invitation. Make an impression that looks like a dinosaur footprint in clay. Let the clay harden. Tie a piece of paper with the party details to the homemade fossil.
You’re ready to turn your home into a dinosaur wonderland. Choose a color scheme for the party. Brown, green, yellow, orange and blue all work well. Use all the colors, or choose a couple as the main color choices. Stuffed dinosaurs work well for table decorations. Make dinosaur cutouts at least 2 feet tall to hang on the walls. Add details to the dinosaur cutouts. Make dinosaur footprints from paper. Attach them to the floor. You can use the footprints to lead guests to different party areas.
Add some decorations to make the room feel like you are outdoors. Fill vases or jugs with wheat or other tall, brown grasses. Make trees by twisting brown paper for the trunk and cutting leaves from green paper. Add streamer vines around the room, on the walls and coming down from the ceiling.
You still need to come up with kid-friendly activities to keep the young dinosaur lovers busy. One option is a fossil dig. Make several fossils from clay. Bury them in sand. The kids dig through the sand or use brushes to brush it aside to find the fossils. You can also make it a relay. The kids run to the sandbox where the fossils are hidden. They dig until they find a fossil, grab it and return it to their team. Another option is a dinosaur egg hunt. Hide several eggs around the party area. The kids find the eggs.
Get some plain party hats and let the kids decorate them. They can add spikes, dinosaur faces or tails. Put out different craft supplies and colored paper so the kids can design their own dinosaur party hats.
Play Pin the Tail on the Dinosaur for a quick classic party game with a twist. Or play Dinosaur, Dinosaur, T-Rex instead of Duck, Duck, Goose. You can easily change classic party games to fit the theme with minor adjustments.
