We are through in Edinburgh for just one day and have to choose somewhere local to Leith for a quick lunch. Teuchters Landing was recommended to us for its speedy friendly service and good food.
We leave a rainy miserable day in Glasgow to arrive to a sun-drenched Edinburgh, it’s a glorious day for lunch down at the docks at Leith. Perfect spot for soaking up some sun.
From the outside Teuchters looks like a run of the mill pub. Upon entering we were pleasantly surprised by the cosiness of the place. It’s got lots of lovely wee nooks and crannies, and a fab conservatory at the back which looks onto the water.
The menu is written up on a large blackboard that covers the best part of a wall, and opposite there’s a lovely big fireplace, with an appropriately positioned comfy couch. Further in there’s tables and chairs set up for lunch or you can settle in to one of the big booths.
We opted to have a drink at the bar first, sitting ourselves next to the big fire to shake the Glasgow chill from our bones.
We were lunching on a Wednesday afternoon, it wasn’t too busy, a few folk from nearby offices and a few regulars who were eating solo at the bar. Teuchters is the sort of place that if you are solo, you will be quite comfortable dining alone, the staff are very friendly and keep you busy with their chat.
Today I was dining with my good friend Rani, who after an eventful (appalling weather made driving conditions difficult) drive through from Glasgow was more than ready for a fulfilling lunch.
As we waiting for our starters we engaged in conversation with one of the locals. He informed us that he comes to Teuchters every Wednesday for a big bowl of mussels, which is according to him the best dish on the menu. Very friendly chap, he gave us the lowdown on Leith and suggested a few places we could go after lunch.
For starters Rani ordered oysters despite desperately trying to get me to join her I totally refused, not being a huge fan of them. She wolfed them down and assured me I had missed out on a delicious tasty treat. Listing all the healthy reasons why one should eat oysters. Not for me, I still wasn’t going to get roped in. I nibbled on olives while we waited for our mains to arrive.
Teuchters is a very friendly place, and clientele being regulars all seemed to know one another. The staff were very efficient and quite chatty as well.
For our mains I opted for the half portion of scallops, a dish of four battered scallops served with home-made chips. It was the first time I had every had scallops served in batter, they went down a treat. Rani went for the meat platter, an antipasti style dish which is served with bread.
She was still hungry after the main, so we ordered dessert. The dessert is served in a mug, interesting idea. We both ordered the Sticky toffee pudding which is served warm with a scoop of ice cream. Perfect end to a great meal.
Teuchters is a lovely wee place, there are a few of them scattered around the city, we will definitely be popping in next time we are in Edinburgh.
