I am very concerned about the music and movie copyright laws. Now you can only copy something if you get permission from the owner or if you are going to use the material you copy for education purposes. I think the copyright laws need to be rewritten. I do research and I need to use music and movies as evidence in my research. I guess you could say I even do research with the copyright law. People are going the wrong direction with blaming piracy for the reason in the decline of digital music sales. Digital music sales are declining but they are not declining for the reasons they are saying. I believe there is a different reason for the decline in digital music sales. Do not blame piracy for the decline in digital music sales. I am hoping by writing this article you will see this problem in a different light.
The music industry is telling us that digital music sales are down. I am talking about physical sales not royalties. Music retailers and digital download stores from all walks of life are reporting that they all have a decline in sales. Digital track sales are down 12.5 percent, from 356.5 million to 312 million. Digital album sales are down 14.2 percent, from 32.4 million to 27.8 million. CD sales are reporting higher number losses. Digital music sales were down 20.5 percent in the first quarter of 2013, from 40.1 million units to 31.9 million. In 2014 digital music sales are down in the first quarter another 13.3%. Sales are down in many categories: jazz is down 8.5%, classical is down 33.3%, pop is down 28.6%, Latin is down 21%, rock, R&B, country, Christian and gospel are down 16 % to 19%. On-demand streaming sales continue to rise.
Download Sales Are Already Down 13.3 Percent in 2014.
Why 2014 Digital Music Sales Are Down
New innovations are not installing CD players. If you buy a new car you will not have a CD player in it. If you buy a new laptop you will not find a CD player in it. These new innovations are not the only reason for a decline in digital music sales.
Customer service is probably the biggest reason digital music sales are down. Everyone is telling the government that they have to create jobs. The government does not create jobs the customer does. Have you dealt with customer service? It is terrible. I cannot count how many times the employee has treated me with disrespect. Plus the packaging is thrown together with no protection for the product. Our products are destroyed at the cash register. The sale is ruined at the cash register before we pay for the product.
We need to create programs for better customer service. Until we fix customer service the economy will continue to decline. We cannot blame customer service problems on the younger generation. Remember the customer is always right. I have heard way too many employees tell me they are right. That is not going to make me come back for another sale. I have even had employees tossing my purchases at me. They should be acting like they care about the product I am buying like they are buying it for themselves.
Employers need to have their top employees out in front waiting on customers. Instead an employee starts out as a trainee at the cash register and moves up in pay to work in the isles with less customer contact. An employer needs to make their best impression at the cash register. An employee should start out in the isle and work their way up with an increase in pay to work at the cash register. Incentives need to be given for those employees who go above and beyond for customer service. That is what is going to increase sales.
The real money for musicians is going on tour. The price of a concert ticket is really high. Fans wait hours and even days in line to buy tickets. Fans want to meet and sit down with their idol. They want to be a part of their life. Lady Gaga has the right idea. When her fans waited in line she spent over $1,000 buying and having pizza delivered for everyone waiting in line. This type of thank you from Lady Gaga has taken her to number one for having a Fan Army. This year, in 2014, Lady Gaga was voted number one for Fan Army. I am a part of her Fan Army. I love the way she thinks.
