Whether you want to save several hundred dollars or just love building your own computers, did you know there were other types of computers you can build?
Cheaper to Build it the Way you Want it
I wouldn’t have thought it would have been cheaper to build your own computer either, but it is. Why is that, you ask? Building it yourself, you aren’t paying for the manufacturer’s labor. Plus they mark up the computers at double or more the price to make a huge profit. You are also paying for the parts only.
While there is a debate about whether or not it’s cheaper to build your own, in the comments of “Does it still make sense to build your own computer?”, it all depends on what you and I consider cheaper. Me: $300 or more in savings, sure it would especially if you have a dead computer that would have to have 90% of the guts stripped out and you are left with the power cord, on and off switch, a few other components that are still alive, and the case tower. That’s a few items you won’t have to buy.
Over all, if you don’t have the extra few hundred dollars to spare, don’t mind doing it yourself since there are tons of videos online to help you with it, and want to learn something new, it would be cheaper to build.
This is the biggest advantage of doing it yourself. Sure, you can choose certain options when ordering from the manufacturer, but is it really what you want. Think about what you really want to do with your desktop. For those who are big into gaming, the advantages will outweigh the negatives every time. You can get the speed and graphic cards you want by doing it yourself.
If you’re into making your own graphics for like comic books or to edit videos you have shot or editing your own music, building it yourself will allow you to get the power needed so your computer won’t crash right in the middle of a project. We all know how annoying and frustrating that is.
As a writer, there are different things like a word processor, being able to make and upload my own book covers, tracking costs, sales, and other things is a must. While factory built computers have served their purposes for me, I would take a do-it-myself one any day. Sure I have done my own upgrades with software and other components, but it hasn’t quite been the same as doing it from the ground up.
Even though I haven’t done a build from start to finish, the upgrades that I did with my first one, wound up making a whole new computer that lasted me almost three times as long as all the others.
Build a Home Theater PC
I didn’t know one could build this device. It’s an all-in-one piece that replaces a DVD player, gaming console, CD player, DVR, digital audio player, and web TV console. The first one I noticed on the web site is a rather thick piece, so, I don’t know that it’ll fit on some of the entertainment centers that are available. Reading further along, I found you can get different sizes of cases to build one of these. Talk about de-cluttering your entertainment area. Now if I were one who had more than one device on my entertainment center, I would seriously consider building a HTPC.
Did you know you can build a PC just for gaming? Well you can. While there are quite a few components that will work in a regular every day use personal computer and a gaming computer, there are pieces you will need for a better running system. For instance, a video and graphic cards that will do the job needed to run multiple styles of games. Not all computer games have the same level of graphics.
You will also need to consider all the other cards, disk space, hard drives, mother boards, and all the other essentials needed for gaming.
Building a Video Editing Computer
Video editing is one area I know several people who do this, and only a few as a professional. Those who do it as part of their professional careers are those who photograph weddings. I do know a few others who do this type of thing with their computers and often wish they had a better system to do this. Even if you want to get started with this or just as a hobby for home videos you take and want to edit out “the garbage,” building a cheaper version that has the type editing system and processor you need may be something to think about sometime down the line.
Items you Need for a Build-Did you know this?
Rosewill RTK-002 Anti-Static Wrist Stap
I listed this particular anti-static band because this is the one we have for when we replace parts ourselves on our computers. Using one of the wrist straps, you reduce or omit the risk of a static discharge during the replacement process that will fry the piece you are replacing.
Belkin F8E060 10-Piece Computer Tool Kit
We have several pieces in this kit that we had already on hand or bought because we didn’t have it when we needed it. The insertion/extraction clipper is a handy tool to have for those components you need to add where your fingers won’t fit.
