Award winning actor Denzel Washington is back in New York City on Broadway once again and this time it is for the revival of the hit stage play entitled Raisin in the Sun. As many fans will know, Washington has appeared on Broadway in shows like Julius Caesar in 2005 and again for an Tony award winning performance for Fences in 2010. This time, he has decided to take on another role that was made famous on screen by Sidney Poitier.
On Friday, March 7, 2014 previews for the play began at the legendary Barrymore Theatre, while the actual opening night was on Thursday, April 3, 2014. I along with the crowd was excited and waited with great anticipation. During the performance, the crowd was excited to see Denzel on the stage once again. From the moment when the curtain rose and until the curtain dropped, the performances were outstanding. The characters were heartfelt, complicated, and very familiar at the same time. Denzel Washington was joined by LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Oscar nominee Sophie Okonedo, Tony winnerAnika Noni Rose, Tony nominee Stephen McKinley Henderson, David Cromer, Jason Dirden, Sean Patrick Thomas and Bryce Clyde Jenkins.
Washington’s portrayal as Walter Younger truly did not disappoint and he seemed to settled into his character as he is known to do in his many film and theater roles. The well-chosen cast also seemed to follow suit and by the time I walked out of the theater was quite mesmerized.
Even if you have seen the movie or other renditions of the play, this installments is definitely a must see. I definitely recommend you see it if you can get to NYC. The show will play a limited engagement through June 15, 2014. For more information on the visit the website.
