Decorating Tips for the New Homeowner on a Budget

by yak max

Home ownership is a wonderful part of the American Dream that many people aspire to. After awhile, apartment living can become discouraging because in most instances you are not allowed to put your unique stamp or signature on something that reflects you. Purchasing a home is one of the more costly ventures that one can invest in. Monthly mortgage and utility bills are part of what being a home owner is all about. But when it comes to decorating, try some of these places for good finds that might fit into your budget.

Thrift store – The fun thing about scouring the racks and shelves at thrift stores is that you never know what you might find there. You might, for example, find just the perfect desk for your home office. It might need a little TLC but often it can be painted to give it a clean and fresh look at a very economical price. Accessories abound here.

Estate and garage sales – At these venues you are likely to find a large variety of items from inexpensive to more costly things. The advantage of shopping at these places is that you are often able to negotiate for a more economical price, especially if it’s on the last day of the sale.

Rummage sales – These are often held at local churches and sponsored by different organizations as a fund raising type event. Anything from pots and pans to crotchet doilies and lamps will often be sold here.

Flea markets and city market – These are places that local merchants sell their wares. Your community newspaper will probably have the dates and times listed. In order to get the best deals you want to arrive early.

Dollar Tree and Dollar General Type Stores – I love these stores because you can usually find something that will work well within your budget. Things such as flower vases, candles, place mats and wall hangings are just a few.

Dumpster diving – While this is not something that I have done much of, I know people who have done so with good results. Sometimes people throw things away not because it isn’t any good but because they are looking for something different.

Front lawns – Bulky items for pick-up often do not even reach the truck because passersby in trucks and/or cars will stop by the curb and rummage through it, often taking your discarded junk. What may be old to you may be just the thing that person was looking for.

Conclusion:

Decorating your home doesn’t have to cause you to break the bank. There are just the right pieces out there that might make your house a home.
