The Marvel Netflix series “Daredevil” has added its lead as Charlie Cox has signed on to portray Matt Murdoch, the blind attorney who also works as the superhero Daredevil. This casting decision came only a short time after the series changed show runners, as Drew Goddard left the project and Steven S. DeKnight took his place. Here is a look at everything you need to know about the upcoming “Daredevil” Netflix series.
Charlie Cox doesn’t have an abundance of experience, although he should be well known to anyone who follows the television show “Boardwalk Empire.” On that popular series, he plays Owen Sleater, a driver and bodyguard for Nucky Thompson. He is also known for his leading role in the Neil Gaiman movie adaptation “Stardust,” where he plays a young man who sets out to find a falling star for the perceived love of his life.
Steven S. DeKnight
Cox joins DeKnight, a show runner with some good experience in genre television. DeKnight ran the extremely popular series “Spartacus” and if he can bring that kind of brilliance to “Daredevil,” it should end up being something special. It is also a good choice because DeKnight also cut his teeth with the same production team that former show runner Goddard did. Both men worked with Joss Whedon from the start. DeKnight has wrote for both “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” under Whedon’s leadership, as well as “Smallville,” giving him some superhero experience as well.
So, with Charlie Cox and Steven S. DeKnight in place, the question now is what the plot will actually be about. There are a lot of great “Daredevil” stories to choose from. The origin was touched on in the Fox movie, but that will likely be ignored with a fresh start here. They would be smart to start off after Matt is already working as Daredevil, rather than run another origin story. However, if they do go with the origin, Matt is the son of a boxer who was murdered by the mob. He was blinded in an accident that helped heighten his other senses, his main powers.
If they start the Netflix “Daredevil” series after he is already established, there are plenty of options. He has always had a strong feud with Bullseye and Kingpin, his two biggest foes. He was betrayed at one time by his old girlfriend and also spent time in jail when his identity was revealed. The subject matter is almost limitless, but the pieces are in place for what hopes to be a great start for Marvel on Netflix.
