Pro wrestling is a fickle sport, the fans typically change their mind about as often as you change a newborn child’s diaper, one week they’ll love someone and just a few weeks later they can’t stand the person because they feel that the company is pushing them too hard. (kayfabekickout) It’s a weird business, but every once in a while they’ll stumble across a worker who the fans love so much that they’re universally loved, although that almost always results in a section of the fan base starting to hate them, stating that the worker is only out for themselves and refuses to put over any other worker in order to stay at the top, a la John Cena. (bleacherreport) One star who hasn’t quite reached that point yet, although the little murmurs have been beginning to develop, is Daniel Bryan. (bleacherreport) There are very few workers who can keep up with Bryan’s work rate, he’s the most technically proficient wrestler between the ropes since Chris Benoit, and he’s got enough personality to keep himself over with the fan base, as a result he’s been able to capture a spot at the top of the WWE heap as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, finally reaching “face of the company” status. (wwenews)
While he’s been working as hard as possible to make it to the top of the WWE, Daniel Bryan has been wearing himself down pretty heavily as well, his work rate is so heavy that it seems as if he may risk putting himself out to pasture a bit sooner than anyone would want. (bleacherreport) The one problem is that Daniel Bryan’s work is so fast paced that he puts himself at risk while putting on the best match of the night at almost every single event that he’s booked to work. (wrestlingforum) While Bryan joined a select class at WrestleMania when he finally reached the pinnacle of the business, he joined another group of workers on Monday night, a group that nobody ever really wants to be part of, but the list of those who are in the class reads like a who’s who of pro wrestling greats. Daniel Bryan announced on Monday he’ll be undergoing neck surgery this Thursday, putting him in a class with the likes of Lita, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Edge, Kurt Angle, John Cena, and others, having worked so hard that they did serious damage to their neck. (talkwrestlingonline) An injury to the neck could be very serious, in some cases costing a worker their career, although the fans are certainly hoping this isn’t the case with Daniel Bryan, we’ll all be glued to our internet access points on Thursday as we wait for news on the severity of the surgery and how long Bryan will be out. (wrestlingnewsworld) The question now is if the WWE will remove the championships from Bryan as he heals, and how long it’s going to take for him to reach the pinnacle once again? Time will tell, we’ll just have to wait and see.
