The two funniest fads I can remember were the pet rock and the invisible dog. I never had either, but I did see a number of people who did. I’ve also seen some interesting food fads…anyone remember the Grapefruit Diet? Fashions have also been on the interesting side. I’ve seen dresses the simply boggle the mind. However, some things are dangerous. Maybe not deadly, but still harmful.
Beezin: For the most part this is harmful mildly. The idea is to take Burt’s Bee Chapstick and apply it to the eyelids and under the eyes. The pain factor sets off hormones in the brain that can make the wearer buzzed. It can also cause chemical conjunctivitis (pink eye) and in some cases blindness.
The problem is the peppermint oil. It is strong, and it can burn skin. It may also be strong enough to cause harm to infants. The oil causes serious breathing problems. The risk is slight, but there.
Piercings: There are parts of the body that shouldn’t get pierced. The reasons should be obvious, but the number of such piercings I see suggest otherwise. If you get your tongue or lip pierced you are endangering your teeth. The metal jewelry chips them. Before you agree to have an area pierced, make sure it isn’t going to endanger other parts of your body. Permanent teeth don’t grow back.
Lowered pants: Forget the “Ick!” factor. Forget the fact that it is illegal in some places to buckle your pants close to your kneecaps. Forget that wearing them like that is a major tripping hazard. Having your pants hang below your backside is harmful to your body. One problem is erectile dysfunction.
High Heels: This is a fashion that has been around for centuries. In one shape or another men and women have worn high heels…and paid the price. That price doesn’t stop at the feet, it can go all the way up your spine.
High heels puts a tremendous amount of force on the toes. As many of these shoes are closed and narrow at the toes, it creates a problem called hammertoes. That isn’t just painful. Later in life it could be dangerous, especially if you keep wearing them. It can cause wounds to open that can’t heal.
Heels throw the entire body out of alignment. They put stress on the knees, the hips and the spine. Arthritis is a problem that can occur. So can problems with the discs in the back.
The best thing we can do when a new fad or fashion comes up is to examine it carefully before deciding to follow it. Invisible dogs don’t bite, but some of these can cause a world of hurt.
