Our dogs are like family. I treat my own dog like a child. While he prefers the outdoors and I can’t change that, I take great care of my pit-bull companion. Like actual children, dogs can get sick. The most common of canine illnesses is worms. Although there are many types of worms, most are easy to spot and can be treated simply without an expensive trip to the veterinarian.
The symptoms of worms vary. If your dog shows any of these signs it may be time to take action: vomiting, coughing, diarrhea, loss of energy, pot belly, loss of appetite, weight loss, skin irritation, or visible worms in the feces. These signs are all symptoms of worms and should not be ignored. Your dog has no way of telling you he does not feel well so it is up to you, the owner, to identify his symptoms.
Luckily, treating most cases of worms is incredibly simple. De-worming tablets can be purchased at Wal-Mart or your local pet supply store for any size dog. These tablets cured a case of worms in my pit-bull and work just as well as most veterinary de-wormers. Giving your dog the tablets is not enough. You must care for them as you would a sick child. Comforting your dog when he doesn’t feel well can help them feel safe and happier. Pet them, cuddle them, let them know that he isn’t fighting his sickness alone. Worms can typically only be contracted in humans by contact with feces. If your dog is clean, you cannot catch the sickness by loving your pet.
Feeding dogs with worms can be tricky. Typically dogs lose interest in eating as their stomach is in pain. You might notice your dog eating grass during his illness. This is common and could be nothing more than his way of treating his upset stomach. Do not discourage this behavior as it rarely causes any ill effects. In my own experience, I had to hand feed my pup. His dry dog food was too rough on his stomach. I wet his dog food with a little warm water to allow it to become soggy and added a can of tuna to the mixture to appeal to him more. It was a little messy but I scooped it into my hand, sat on the ground, put hid head on my lap and allowed him to eat from my hand. Keeping your dog fed will help them grow stronger to fight off the worms and even made my dog more affectionate toward me.
If your canine companion shows signs of worms, do not worry. This illness is extremely common and can be treated quite simply. Dogs are strong creatures and with a little help from you, they can overcome the sickness. Keeping an eye out for symptoms and detecting the illness early can help in curing your dog. Following these instructions will save your dog’s life and your money. Soon enough, your dog will be back to perfect health and will be happy once again.
