What’s the theme of this year’s birthday party for your child? You can choose from so many, such as a pirate party, a Barbie party, and zillions of others. But an easy one to accomplish is a kid theme. That is, you’ll have lots of kids in attendance, so “kids” can be the theme. The children can draw pictures of themselves and give them to the birthday boy or girl. You can make a banner featuring stick kid drawings. And, you can easily make kid-theme desserts, too. Turn cupcakes into cute and tasty treats or desserts and every kid at the party will be excited and full.

You can make the sweetest desserts when you turn cupcakes into kids. To do so, start out with any flavor of cupcakes and frost with any color/flavor of frosting. Each cupcake will represent the pants or “bottom” of the kid. Cut a wooden skewer in half, push it into a cupcake, and leave the length of the skewer sticking up.

The skewer will be used to build the kid. Decide on what you will use for the head. It could be a mini muffin – turned on its side, a circle cut from a brownie, two vanilla wafers, a sandwich cookie, or another treat. Allow enough of the skewer to hold the head and cover the rest of the skewer with a homemade shirt.

If you’re using a mini muffin for the head, turn it on its side, and push the skewer through the wrapper. For vanilla wafers, put frosting on the back of each cookie, and trap the end of the skewer between them. When the head is in place, cut two shirt shapes from paper or cloth. (Some people will find it easier to remove the head, attach the shirt, and then put the head back on the skewer.)

Create facial features by using candy eyes, and tube frosting for the mouth, or even by drawing a face on with a food marker. To finish the arrangement, apply a thin layer of glue to the back of each shirt. Stick them together, trapping the skewer between them. Embellish the shirts with cutout ties, pockets, collars, monograms, or other accents.

If you want, give the kids hair by using common sweets. Apply frosting and marshmallows, just frosting, frosting and licorice (using the frosting as glue), or other combinations. Each kid dessert will have a personality all his own and all of them will be gobbled up by the party children.
