Just because you’ll never read a book again doesn’t mean you should toss it. The books and the pages inside work for lots of different project ideas. Try one of these book crafts instead of tossing those old books.
Pages from books work well for artwork. You can frame a favorite page from a story or the picture from a child’s picture book as art. Or you can use the pages of a book as the background. Decoupage the pages onto a canvas and paint images over the words. Or use pieces of book pages in a collage.
If you have a book with an interesting cover, use it as a homemade picture frame. Measure the size of the picture. On the inside cover, draw a rectangle or square slightly smaller than the dimensions of the picture. Use a utility knife to cut out the shape. Cut a piece of cardboard slightly larger than the picture. Hot glue the cardboard to the inside of the book cover, leaving one side unglued. This allows you to slip a photo down in front of the cardboard so it shows through the opening in the cover. Finish the front edge of the opening with a ribbon. Set the book up on a table with the picture displayed.
If you have some old books with fun covers that you no longer want to keep, use them to make a secret storage compartment on a shelf. Cut the book spines off. Hot glue them next to one another along a wooden box so it looks like a row of books stacked side-by-side. Keep the cover intact on the two end books. Hot glue the covers along the sides of the box on either end to hide the sides. Place the book box on a shelf. This works well to hide things like an Internet router that aren’t attractive to look at.
You can also make a secret compartment inside a single book. Cut a square or rectangle out of the middle of all of the pages in the book. Don’t cut all the way to the edge of the pages in any direction. You can use it to hide things without people knowing anything is inside.
Decorative Stack of Books
If the covers of the books aren’t particularly interesting, give them a new look and use them as a display. You can decoupage pretty papers onto the covers of the books. You might use a particular theme, such as travel or adventure. You might decoupage maps onto the books or images that remind you of traveling and finding adventure. Stack up the books to make a decorative pile for your coffee table, shelf or other area.
