Creative and Practical Ways to Add Charm to a Vintage Country Kitchen

by yak max

A country kitchen can ooze with vintage style and lack real charm. It takes more than just dated appliances and decades-old furniture to add decorative appeal to an early traditional space. Well-chosen décor, furnishings and a few small changes can make a tremendous difference in the overall look of the room. Choose items according to their level of appeal instead of the date they were manufactured. A good deal is not a bargain if it does not add visual interest to the room.

Replace Wooden Dining Chairs with a Vintage Bench

Wooden chairs and a farm-style table are ideal in a vintage kitchen that has country flair, but another option for seating can look even better. Repurpose two of the chairs to another space, and replace them with a wooden bench. Choose a church-style bench with a back or simple platform seat. It will add amazing charm while providing more seating.

Top Cabinets with Decorative Molding

The word vintage makes furnishings and other items sound more appealing, but sometimes they are in need of a little revamping. Early to mid-20th century cabinets are often nothing more than basic wall-mounted storage units, but you can add decorative charm with wooden molding. Paint or stain decorative molding of your choice. It will add gorgeous country style without breaking the bank.

Hide Small Appliances

Small appliances such as blenders, can openers and grills might be necessary kitchen components, but they do not have to be part of the decorating scheme. When trying to add charm to a vintage country kitchen, tuck away small electrical appliances. Add an old-time bread box that offers plenty of interior space, but do not use it for storing bread. Use it to hide a toaster and/or other small items. Install an appliance garage below upper cabinets, and use it to store larger items that are not part of the decorating scheme. Simple changes can make a tremendous difference.

Decorate with Vintage Crockery

When seeking decorative pieces for a vintage kitchen, browse auction sites and antique stores for vintage crockery. Crocks that were once used solely for food storage can be used for practical and decorative purposes. A large pickling crock can be used to hold a fern, a container of pet food or other appropriate items. A smaller crock from the same era can be used to hold cooking tools. Little things can add tremendous charm to a vintage kitchen. Items from the past that were once considered ordinary will look anything but common in your country-style home.
