Rub-on decals are a fun, kid-friendly way to turn a boring, everyday vase into something unique and special. They are a fantastic way to create a gift your child will enjoy making and be proud to give. Here’s what you need to do to make one:
To decorate your vase you’ll need:
· a vase
· rub-on decals
There are tons of rub-on decals available in every theme imaginable. Finding the perfect set to personalize your project will be easy. But when you choose your materials, there are a couple things to remember. A vase with smooth sides and no sharp corners will give you more flexibility in placing your rub-ons. Decals that wrap around corners can be harder to apply and easier to snag and rip. The size of the rub-on decals can also be an issue. Smaller decals take less work — and patience — to apply and won’t overwhelm the vase.
As with any kids’ activity, a little preparation will help things go more smoothly and make creating together more fun! Before you call the kids, gather your materials. Rub-ons generally come in sheets, so you will want to cut them apart for easy positioning. Don’t trim too close to the edges of the decal. Make sure you read the directions first in case the rub-on decals you choose require any special steps to look their best. You’ll also want to wipe of the vase so the rub-on decals have a clean surface to stick to.
Place the rub-on decals
Have your kids place the decals around the vase, using the tape to hold them loosely in place. Remember to check the look of the vase from several different angles. Scatter the decals around the vase so that it looks great from every angle.
Rub it into place
Most rub-on decals are applied with pressure. Many sets come with a popsicle stick-like tool. If yours doesn’t or you need more than one, popsicle sticks are readily available in the craft aisles.
Hold the popsicle stick in one hand and use the fingers from you other hand to hold the decal in place. Use the rounded edges of the tool to rub against the backing paper until the rub-on decal is off the paper and on the vase. Then just lift away the backing paper and admire your work. Repeat for each of your rub-on decals until they’re all on the vase.
Give your vase something to show off
Now that you’ve dressed up your vase with rub-on decals, give it something to show off. Add cut flowers or artificial flowers (a handy trick if you have a black thumb like me!). If your vase is clear, you can consider something a little more unexpected. Instead of flowers add stones, colored gravel or sand, or even confetti and glitter.
You’ve turned a plain vase into something unique! Set it somewhere you’ll be able to see it and enjoy it, or share the smiles by giving it to someone you love.
