With the advancement of technology it has given people a broader way to meet new people. but this is also becoming a buffet for scam and con artists to find victims to run their scams and games on. With the increased popularity of online dating many are finding it easier to meet people on dating websites than actually going to bars. Yet it’s setting up countless men and women for becoming victims to scams that they’re un-willng participants in. There’s a lot to be said as to how many scammers take people for thousands of dollars in scams of situations that are simply not true. This is why you need to be extremely careful with online dating because not everyone is honest when it comes to internet dating.
There’s a high number of African citizens running scams on innocent European and American people because as many know Africa is one of the poorest nations in the world and any promise of marriage or means of a new life to someone from Senegal, Nigeria, or any country along the West Africa coast will jump on that because it’s guaranteed freedom from a country that could be ruled by a military regime or dictatorship. You will however need to know the following to realize if you’re being conned by a scam artist. The following is what you need to recognize as possible red flags and to terminate any and all contact with that person and have nothing to do with them.
Sketchy physical description-A legitimate person who’s height and weight proportionate will not weigh under a certain amount. Ask for a photograph and see if what the person is telling you is adding up to what you see. Some of these scam artists surf online dating sites looking for people that appear to be lonely or physically unappealing the ones that most would not bother with.
Excessive questioning-Scam artists try to learn more about you than you about them. If you are asked in detail as to what you make for a living before and after taxes and where you bank at it’s a red flag because the con is to set you up to use you to transfer money for projects or situations that don’t exist. If you get questioned about your personal finances or they’re asking for information that’s deemed of a personal nature….cut them off ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!
Getting attached and sentimental too quickly-Most people would not tell a stranger they’re in love with them and know that love takes time to build. It would be rather fishy to hear something like that coming from a person you have not met personally. This is another way scammers can win you over because if you’re someone who’s never had anyone pay attention to you it’s flattering when someone showing you genuine interest, but this kind of interest is more pleasing to the con artist than the victim who’s getting taken. Be wary of someone saying they love you and they don’t know you like that let alone met you.
Cutting and pasting-This is something con artists do on websites such as Craigslist since they offer a dating section where they’re putting up profiles using photos that they copy off other people’s social media pages such as Facebook or MySpace or dating profiles from online sites like Plenty of Fish or Zoosk. This is to keep from being discovered that they’re not the person they say they are.
Phone numbers are from outside the country or state-A person that’s local would not have an out of town number and usually most con artists use pay as you go cell phones registered under a false name so they can’t be traced. If you notice a number that comes up on your caller ID that isnt familiar with a strange area code that’s a huge red flag.
When you notice that the person who you’re talking to is not who they say they are you need to use extreme caution because you don’t want to get involved with someone who is feeding you lies and isn’t being honest about who they are. Be careful dealing with some people on the internet because a good percentage of them are married or seriously involved with a spouse or significant other. Other clues you can find out about someone being a scam is how they will get angry if you’re asking them questions if you start to pick up on something that doesnt sound quite right. Use sound judgment when you are dealing with people from the internet.
