Wives submit to your husbands! Have you heard that one before? How about God so loved the world that he gave his only son. I’m certain you’ve heard that one. These are two of the most commonly misinterpreted verses in the Bible, if not the top two. The number one reason verses are misinterpreted is because we fail to read the entirety of the scripture they are contained in. Another reason we can’t understand them for their true meaning is because we are reading them with our eyes instead of our hearts. “You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.” Confused? “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.” Scriptures are not meant to be interpreted in their exact context. Jesus spoke in parables because that was the only way he could get the people to understand his message.
Many of us hear scripture that is spoken to us like; wives submit to your husbands. Women automatically become offended when they hear this because submit means “to give over or yield to the power of authority,” and most women don’t believe their husband is the authority. When men hear this they get overly excited because they believe it gives them the right to dominate their wife. What the scripture actually says is “For wives this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord.” That sentence starts with the phrase “for wives this means” that tells us that the author was referring to something that was mentioned prior to making that statement. Here’s what it says “And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Reverence? That’s kind of a big word for some people, but it basically means out of respect, so “submit to one another out of respect for Christ.” The scripture goes on to say “so again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” Respect your husband is another way of saying to deeply admire your husbands qualities, but that’s only if he’s holding up his end of the deal, which is to “love his wife as he loves himself.” Nowhere in the scripture does it say that the man is the dominant force who makes his wife scared and powerless when he’s around, but when you only read or hear this fragment of it “wives this means submit to your husbands” as it is commonly used it makes it sound that way. The verse just before that one clearly says “submit to one another.” Sorry guys that means you have to be submissive too.
God so loved the world that he gave his only son, and whoever believes in him will have eternal life. That sounds pretty simple and awesome at the same time right? Just believe that Jesus, the son of God came to earth and died, and in doing so you live forever. But let’s look at the scripture leading up to that verse, and some scriptures that follow. Jesus spoke these words to Nicodemus before declaring that God sent his son; “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of the water and the spirit.” Hmm that sounds like there’s a little more to it than just believing in God’s son. Let’s look at the entirety of the scripture ” For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” That’s a little confusing if you just rush through it. I’ll break it down; believe in God’s son and you will have eternal life. God’s son Jesus did not come to sentence us to any type of punishment. Whoever believes will not be punished, but whoever doesn’t believe will be punished. Jesus (light) came into the world, and his spirit is still here. People value their evil deeds more than they value God’s sacrifice (his son Jesus). They are afraid of getting to know him because their evil acts will be made known (but the funny thing is he knows about them already). Whoever lives by what is right get’s to know Jesus so that their good deeds can be done for God. Believing in God’s son doesn’t just mean believe that he existed, but it means to show your belief by getting to know him, so that you can know God. “No one comes to the Father (God) except through me.” Those are the words spoken by Jesus whom we are supposed to believe in if we want to live eternally. In order to receive that eternal life we must believe in him to the fullest extent, which means we believe what he said, and not just that he existed. The kingdom of God is where eternal life is spent, and just before saying “whoever believes in him will have eternal life” Jesus says “no on can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of the water and the spirit. What’s he talking about there? Being baptized, and born again in spirit.
Let me know what you think. I’d like to hear everyone’s opinions on this. What about other scriptures you’ve heard that you find offensive, or maybe think “i don’t know about that.” Let’s talk.
