I will be coming up on five years sober this October, and I must say this journey has had many ups, and then again there were some downs too.
Making up your mind to quit something that has been a huge part of your life for so many years is really a hard thing to do. In the beginning I had my doubts that I could even get sober and to stay sober, but as I put my mind to it things started to work in my favor.
Once I realized I truly had an addiction to alcohol I decided something had to be done in order to save my family, and to save my own life. Many people think that an addiction to alcohol is easy to surrender to, but believe me, it is very hard. So many things went through my mind when I thought about stopping drinking alcohol.
I have to make one statement here and that is, “I have met many sober people, people that don’t drink alcohol at all, and their remarks to me are something like this.”
**You tell me you will be sober five years in October, and you brag about it, BUT really what is the big deal they say! Well these people that think they know everything have no idea just how hard it is for an alcoholic to stop drinking, because they have not been in my shoes or any alcoholics shoes. Just let these people live in an alcoholics life for one month and see how they feel then when they try to quit drinking. I am very proud of my accomplishments with quitting drinking as should every alcoholic that has surrendered to their inner demons.**
HERE ARE JUST A FEW THINGS THAT WENT THROUGH MY MIND WHEN I WAS READY TO SURRENDER TO MY ADDICTION TO ALCOHOL:
- Will I be able to stay sober once I get sober?
- Will my life be boring because I don’t have a drink in my hand?
- Will I lose my drinking buddies because I will be sober and they will not?
- Will I get sick from quitting drinking? (I quit Cold Turkey)
- Will my life be better than it is now being addicted?
- Will my physical appearance improve once I stop drinking?
- What will I do to keep my mind off drinking alcohol?
- Will I ever be able to have fun again at a party being sober?
1A I got sober and stayed sober.
2A My life is not boring whatsoever.
3A I did lose my drinking buddies due to my sobriety.
4A I never got sick from quitting drinking cold turkey.
5A My life is 150% better now being sober.
6A My physical appearance has improved a great deal and lost 50 pounds.
7A I have plenty to do now being sober and one thing I do is to write each day on alcohol addiction.
8A I have more fun at parties being sober than I ever had being drunk.
So, yes I am Proud, Happy and Sober as should every alcoholic that has surrendered to their addiction to alcohol. Brag and stand tall because you and I have achieved the biggest thing in our life and we saved our life along the way just by changing our ways of living, and got sober.
