Now I am not the type of critic that gets a kick out of talking smack about someone else’s work but having said that it does come with the territory. Being as how this is my first negative review of a comic, I am going to try and sum this up professionally and with as little biased as possible.
David Cross is a decent comedian to most. I am a big fan of Arrested Development and I loved Small Soldiers growing up so it isn’t David Cross I have a problem with, just his stand up. He has a lot of great concepts and good ideas, and he could even possibly be grouped in to the same type of comedy that my favorite comedians perform which is challenging the form and down with political correctness, but having said that, to me, he simply falls short. His messages seem pretty on point and well constructed, but the jokes in the end just seem to be missing something. I can’t figure out what it is, but he just never makes me laugh. To be honest I rarely don’t like a comic, I mean they have to just really not be my thing for me to say that I don’t like them, and David Cross is really just not my thing. I think what it is, is that his comedy always comes off so bitter that the sweet just isn’t worth it to me. Like if you put chocolate on grapefruit, and hey some people love grapefruit and thinks that sounds great, but if you are just one of those people who really hates grapefruit, like me, the chocolate doesn’t really help anything. Having said all that, He seems like a perfectly cool guy and I have seen the movie Hecklers so I am aware of how negative criticism can hurt comedians as well as their reputation so I would say you should still give him a try and see for yourself, because heck, some people just like grapefruit.
Since I personally have no favorite track by him I’ll simply suggest his most listened to track on Spotify which is David Cross – Women, Please Rinse Off Your $#%%^& And @!@#$ So tell me what your grapefruit is in the comment section below.
