Regarded as one of the most highly touted players in the nation, defensive back Marlon Humphrey is expected to play an integral role for the Alabama Crimson Tide this fall.
Humphrey, the pride of Hoover, Alabama, signed with UA in February after being courted by some of the most successful programs in the country. Selecting the Crimson Tide over the Florida State Seminoles, the five-star prospect will fill a vital need in the ‘Bama secondary.
As the son of Alabama legend Bobby Humphrey, Marlon Humphrey was expected, by many, to attend the University of Alabama simply by default, however, those who followed his recruitment understood that “family tradition” wouldn’t be quite enough to seal the deal. In fact, many pundits seemed to think that Humphrey would select Florida State simply to get out of the shadow of his father, who played running back for the Crimson Tide in the 1980s.
While opinions concerning Humphrey’s final destination flew left and right, roughly one week prior to national signing day, when much of central Alabama was covered in snow, Marlon Humphrey used the power of social media to declare that he would be attending the University of Alabama. Going against his original plan to wait until national signing day to make his intentions known, Humphrey’s verbal commitment, or in this case, written commitment, was certainly not expected.
From a football standpoint, Humphrey, as mentioned earlier, is expected to compete for ample playing time as a true freshman. Granted, as noted ad nauseam in a prior body of work in respect to the recruiting process, what a player accomplished in high school, and what type of accolades he received, become quite irrelevant as soon as preseason practice begins. The Alabama roster is filled with elite talent, all of whom were most likely significant stars in high school.
Humphrey, by all accounts, has the talent and the necessary intangibles to be a major player at the collegiate level. As an elite track star during his high school career, Humphrey will also bring supreme athleticism to the table, which is paramount for a defensive back in the Southeastern Conference.
In the current age of social media, and fandom gone wild, it will be next to impossible for Humphrey to adorn an Alabama jersey and not feel the pressure of lofty expectations, however, Humphrey didn’t make it this far due to a lack of confidence.
