Like an alcoholic who just can’t stay away from the booze, I am writing yet another article about CM Punk returning to the WWE. No matter how many times I swear I’ll never write another one of these CM Punk articles, the Straight Edge Superstar draws me back to my laptop like a beckoning bottle of bourbon. Unfortunately, my brain has put two separate events together and I am now of the opinion that CM Punk may return at WWE Payback.
Payback is the WWE’s next pay-per-view on June 1, 2014. (Actually, these events are no longer “pay-per-views” in America since most people now watch them on the WWE Network.) Anyway, Payback will emanate from CM Punk’s hometown of Chicago this year. I know what you’re thinking. CM Punk was supposed to return when WWE Raw was in Chicago, but all we got was his entrance music and a Paul Heyman promo.
By itself, Payback taking place in Chicago wouldn’t have been enough to draw me to the streetlight like a moth at midnight. However, a rumor recently surfaced that AJ Lee would be returning to the WWE in early June. It’s no secret that CM Punk and AJ Lee are engaged and with her fiancée off the road in the WWE, she likely requested time off to spend some quality time with him. If they were to return at Payback, it would set up an incredible CM Punk storyline.
CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan
If the best competition for the WWE World Heavyweight Champion is Kane, then the company is in serious trouble. Batista’s return has been the biggest flop since The Lone Ranger. We now realize that Randy Orton is just as boring as a heel as he was as a face. And Brock Lesnar can’t hang around long enough to work a major storyline. The best angle for the summer of 2014 is a feud between CM Punk and Daniel Bryan, culminating at SummerSlam.
Rumor has it that CM Punk left the WWE because he wasn’t happy about not being booked for the main event of WrestleMania XXX. The wrestler who got his title shot was Daniel Bryan. CM Punk is great on the mic and he would infuse new life in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship picture. But it gets better. The respective fiancée and wife of each wrestler could also feud, adding needed depth and life to the struggling Divas division.
Daniel Bryan has been working with his new wife, Brie Bella, on improving her wrestling in the ring. Just as Daniel Bryan earned a place in the spotlight at WrestleMania XXX over CM Punk, Brie Bella continues to be a reality television star on Total Divas instead of AJ Lee. Although AJ Lee reigned as the WWE Divas Champion for 295 days, she never earned the notoriety and popularity of The Bella Twins and the other regulars on Total Divas.
Of course, this is all speculation. And since CM Punk is my favorite wrestler of this generation, I am cursed with an incessant desire to see him return to the WWE. But this scenario would be great for the entire WWE. The return of CM Punk would certainly make Payback one of the biggest wrestling events of the year.
