Something that may come as a surprise to people who don’t know a lot about the Catholic faith is Catholicism is a subset of Christianity. Therefore Catholics are actually Christians, but not all Christians are Catholics. A lot of people know about other denominations such as Baptist, Methodist, Orthodox, Lutheran, Presbyterian etc. But Christianity falls under people who worship and follow Jesus. Catholics are actually the largest group in the Christian faith. Both faith’s originated in Jerusalem and founded by Jesus and St. Peter the Apostle around 33A.D.
Christians worship in a church or chapel usually. While Catholics can also worship in a church or chapel, they usually call their place of worship a cathedral. Catholics symbolism of their faith is expressed by pictures or statues of Mary (Jesus’s Mother), crosses, and Jesus. Christians have the same along with the display of the Bible. However in Christianity statues such as Mary are not worshiped.
Core Beliefs/Life after Death
Both Catholics and Christians believe in the trinity, which means three person in one. (Father, Son and Holy Ghost) Both believe that you must follow the commandments of Christ and be accepting of him as your personal savior to enter heaven. Also they both believe in heaven for the followers of Christ, and Hell as an eternal place of fire and damnation for those who have not accepted Christ. The difference is Catholics believe in the temporal state known as purgatory “final purification” for those who are destined for heaven because they were saved before death, but haven’t reached a full state of holiness. When it comes to marriage Christians are allowed to divorce for reasons such as adultery, but Catholics do not believe in divorce for any such reason. However they can do an annulment saying the marriage was “invalid.”
Catholics are known for leaders such as The Pope, Priest, Monks, Nuns, and Deacons etc. In the Christian church leaders are called Pastor, Reverend, Priest, Bishop etc.
Both believe humans must have Salvation through Christ in order to reach Heaven because of the sin of Adam. However they have differing beliefs on if salvation can be lost. The different denominations of Christianity have differences in opinion also. They all believe that Jesus is the only way that a person can be saved. Catholics believe that salvation can be lost through sin. Some denominations of Christianity say “once saved always saved,” and some believe it can be lost like the catholic faith. Catholics believe in good works to enter heaven along with the salvation through Jesus, however; Christians believe that salvation is not achieved through good works, but through the acceptance of Jesus, but good works is a part of how we show love to the world.
