The perfect red lipstick is not cosmetic, it is theatric! Luscious, ruby lips will draw attention to your face, kissing every utterance with vivacity. Red lipstick is for everyone, but choosing the right shade and proper application takes effort. If you are looking to make a dramatic scarlet statement, here are some tips to find and apply the best red for your smile!
Choosing the right red
Your first step toward daring lips is matching your complexion with the right shade of red. For fair skin, choose a red with a blue-hue to contrast subtle pink tones. For medium skin, find a true, or blood red. For olive complexions, select a dark red, or burgundy shade. Brick-reds and raspberry shades will pop against dark complexions.
When wearing show-stopping lipstick, it is important to keep lips moisturized, and crack-free! Many lipsticks now include a moisture component, or come with moisturizing gloss. I have always found that a healthy dose of my favorite chapstick before lipstick application keeps my lips well moisturized, and helps even out color!
To line, or not to line…
I think it was written in the makeup handbook, “Thou shalt not wear red lipstick without liner!” Perhaps someone should publish a revision? Sure, lip-liner adds definition, and helps keep color from smudging. But in this era of bright smoky-eyes and dramatic pastels, there are no unbreakable beauty-rules! If you are going to line you lips, don’t use red lip-liner! If it doesn’t match your lipstick precisely, you will create an undesirable two-tone effect. Instead, choose a liner as close as possible to your natural lip color. Line your lips, and then fill in completely to give your lipstick a solid base. If you don’t want to use lip-liner, use a flat lipstick brush, and start color at the center of the lower lip, pulling out, then upward to achieve a sleek edge.
Avoiding ‘zombie teeth’
Red lipstick bleeds, sometimes onto your teeth. To avoid looking like a member of the undead after feeding time, try one of these tips to keep your pearly-whites clean:
1. Before lipstick application, gloss your teeth with a dab of petroleum jelly.
2. After lipstick application, blot lightly on a folded tissue.
3. After lipstick application, put your index finger into your mouth, close your lips, and pull outward to remove excess pigment.
Spice up your kiss with red-hot lips!
