Roanoke, Virginia is the place to be for St. Patrick’s Day 2014. McDonald’s is teaming up with the city of Roanoke for one of the biggest and best events of the region, The Shamrock Festival. There will be events to celebrate Irish Culture all day through out the city on Saturday, March 15th. Although St. Patrick’s Day does have a reputation for being a “drinking holiday” there are plenty of family friendly events going on. Here are four you won’t want to miss.
McDonald’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Kick off the day with a parade! What better way to start the celebration than the McDonald’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. With elaborate floats, bag pipers and more there is a reason this parade receives national attention! On Saturday, March 15th at 11 am the parade begins at Jefferson St. continuing down Cambell Ave. and finishing down Williamson Rd. Be sure to arrive early for a good viewing spot.
The Shamrock Festival
Next head on over to The Shamrock Festival located at the Wells Fargo Plaza at the corner of Market St and Salem Ave. It runs from Noon to 8 PM. Local vendors will have booths lining the City Market Building and you won’t want to miss the sounds of local and regional musicians. This year the festival will be featuring the musical talents of Scruffy Murphy, Polychrome, Rutledge, and Madrone.
The McDonald’s Children’s Area
Your family won’t want to miss checking out the McDonald’s Children’s Area open from Noon – 8 PM outside of Taubman Museum of Art. There will be bounce houses, face painting, games and more shamrock themed fun. It is the place to be if you have little ones.
Martin’s St. Patrick’s Day Block Party
The gates open at 9 AM and the starts at 1. It wouldn’t be St. Patrick’s Day without checking out Martin’s Block Party. There will be local talents such as Deer Run Drifters, Grass Monkey, Relacksachian, Tobacco Apache, The Floorboards, Folk Soul Revival, The Riverbank Ramblers, and Ben Trout and Friends. Look for more local vendors and celtic fun. Be sure to arrive before 7 PM as they start charging $10 dollars admission,
The Corned Beef & Co. Celtic Celebration
at 100 Block of Jefferson St be sure to check out the Celtic Celebration sponsored by Corned Beef & Co. There will be celtic music, dancers, more local vendors, Celtic food and even a beer garden. The kids will love watching Irish step dancers and the whole family can enjoy the talents of seven performing groups. There will also be children’s activities and the Irish Session room located on the second floor of Corned Beef & Co will be open offering the opportunities to showcase your inner Irish talents.
With so much to see and do it is not a surprise that people come from miles around to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Roanoke. This year’s Irish Festival is sure to be an event to remember.
