Can You Get Pregnant While You Have a Yeast Infection?

Yeast infections are severe fungal infections that are common in women. And a common question that arises in the mind is that whether it is possible to get pregnant while having a yeast infection. It is absolutely possible to get pregnant. But it is generally not advisable because of the recurring tendency of the infection. Yeast infection is likely to affect many women during pregnancy as they become susceptible to the infection. The hormonal changes during pregnancy make it ideal for the yeast to grow. The estrogen and sugar levels in a woman’s body increases during pregnancy and this leads to the growth of yeast.

The pH level of the infected area decreases and the body starts getting more sugar. The yeast feeds on the excessive sugar and multiplies easily. This results in yeast infections during pregnancy. Almost 80% of women experience yeast infection during pregnancy due to the various hormonal changes. So, it is never a good idea to conceive before treating the yeast infection. Being pregnant after having a yeast infection, increases its severity and it becomes difficult to treat the infection.

Moreover, the pregnant woman’s immune system is also affected due to hormonal changes. Candida albicans are known to affect people with weaker immunity with greater ease. So, this condition becomes conducive for the overgrowth of yeast. Since the yeast is always present in the human body, it looks for conditions when it can multiply and pregnancy becomes the ideal condition. As a result most women suffer from yeast infections during pregnancy. Therefore, women must cure the infection before conceiving.

It is always safe to conceive after curing the yeast infection. Although women can get pregnant while having a yeast infection, there is a risk of spreading it to the partner. Moreover, the chances of recurrence increases with pregnancy and one would surely not like to face the infection after recovery. Pregnancy also limits the usage of medicines. So, a pregnant woman cannot take in all kinds of medicines used for treating Candidiasis. In most cases, only topical creams and lotions can be applied to the infected areas. This affects the treatment to a certain extent and they have to depend on home remedies for recovery.

Since most women suffer from vaginal candidiasis, it is not likely to affect the ovulation cycle of the body. Therefore, the body is equipped to conceive a child even during the infection. There is a common myth that yeast infections prevent pregnancy. But, this myth has been destroyed by fact which states that a woman faces no problem in conceiving a child. However, pregnancy is generally uncommon during the infection because certain treatment methods do not allow sexual relations and there is also a fear of the infection being transmitted to the partner or the unborn baby, who might develop oral thrush after birth.
