When you first begin thinking about becoming a freelance writer, the world seems filled with endless possibilities. Many people think that freelance writers have an easy job where they are at home all day doing whatever they want. What they do not understand is how much work it takes to become a successful freelance writer and that even though a freelance writer does not go to a job every day, they still work every single day. Freelance writers have to work hard every day, many putting in 10-12 hours each day just to make enough money to get by. Not every writer has to work this many hours and after a writer gets some experience and repeat customers they can usually work a normal 8 hour day and be able to earn enough money to pay the bills.
Can you use freelance writing to make money? Most people who decide to become a freelance writer do this because they love writing. They love getting their thoughts down on paper, online, or in print so they can share it with others. Freelance writers have something to say, they are opinionated in many different areas and they are not afraid to write about the things they love. On the other hand, everyone has to make a living so freelance writers sell what they write to people and this is how they make money from it. There are many ways to go about selling you work online and offline including freelance jobsites, making a living writing for a local newspaper, or simply blogging about your favorite subject and earning money from the ads. The question still remains,’ Can you become a freelance writer?’
In order to become a freelance writer you will need a few skills. One, you must be able to put words together; you have to be able to write something that is easy to read and has a flow. If you cannot put words together that make sense, no one is going to buy your articles. That said you do not have to be the world’s greatest writer. The more you write the better you will get, and the better you get the more you will earn. Second, you have to be able to type. If you are a hunt and peck kind of typist, you will not be able to produce many articles in one day and the job will not be worth the money you are making. If you need help with your typing speed there are many free downloads online that will teach you how to type faster. I have found that the ones aimed at children usually help the most because they teach you how to type while playing little games. Third, you have to know how to use correct grammar. If you don’t understand the difference between their, there, and they’re, than you’re articles are not going to make much sense. If you need help with your grammar, make sure you study this before you try putting an article together. Spelling is the fourth skill that you will need to become a successful freelance writer. Now I understand that word programs do come with spell check and many come with grammar check, but if you do not have these skills, you will not know which option to choose when you have made a spelling or grammar mistake. Self-discipline is the final skill that I will be discussing. Freelance writers must be self-disciplined. There is no boss to tell you that you cannot play games while you are supposed to be working, or to tell you that you cannot accept personal phone calls during working hours.
As a freelance writer you must make a set of rules for yourself. You are also responsible for setting up your own schedule and insuring that every day you get the amount of work done that you need to get done. If you have set a goal for yourself to write ten articles per day and find yourself talking on the phone to your friends for 3 hours a day, you are not going to reach your goal. If you do not reach your goals you will give up because you will not see a good income coming from freelance writing. You have to dedicate yourself to writing for ‘X’ amount of hours per day producing ‘Y’ amount of articles per day. Being you own boss is great if you can handle the job.
Now you know the basics of what it takes to become a freelance writer, so I ask you, “Can you become a freelance writer?”
