Marvel Studios is set to embark on unfamiliar territory in August as they release a movie with a set of practically unknown characters. Guardians of the Galaxy will be a real test for the massively successful superhero movie. The Avengers has been massively successful but the movie was built from several stand-alone films building up the various characters. Guardians of the Galaxy will have little of that same support. This means that there is a great deal of speculation about the story line and how it may tie in with the rest of the Marvel movies. Here are some of the issues that the movie will need to overcome to be successful.
The Guardians of the Galaxy are almost completely unknown. With the Avengers, most people were familiar with Iron Man, Captain America and the Incredible Hulk. Even some comic book fans are unfamiliar with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Will this lack of knowledge hurt ticket sales? It may be the lack of familiarity drives ticket sales because most Marvel fans really do not know what to expect. Many may see the movie to learn more about these characters that Marvel has done an incredible job promoting. The first trailer for the movie actually introduces the characters to the audience.
Unknown story line
Most Marvel viewers are unfamiliar with the ongoing story line used with the Guardians because it was not as popular as the Avengers or the X-Men. However, the story ties into the ongoing coming of Thanos. Thanos was introduced at the end of the Avengers movie and everyone knows he is coming but few people know why. Thanos has one goal and one goal only. He wants to kill as many people as possible as a gift to Death. Death is actually personified in the Marvel comic as an actual character. Thanos has an obsession with Death and plans to do anything he can to please her.
Story tie in
Why did Marvel create a movie about an unknown group of heroes? In the comic book version, the Guardians of the Galaxy filled a key role in the ongoing battle with Thanos. Before the Avengers went toe to toe with the galactic nemesis, Thanos had to deal with the Guardians. Thanos lost most of his army and starships in his battle with the Guardians of the Galaxy. For many reasons the Guardians of the Galaxy could not stop Thanos and his plans to destroy earth’s solar system but they did slow down the process long enough for the Avengers to finish the job. In many ways, the Avengers would have never stopped Thanos with the help of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Overall, will the Guardians of the galaxy have the same draw and appeal as the Avengers? No and it doesn’t need to. The draw that is already created for the movie has been so big that Marvel is already planning a second Guardians movie as a follow up. Marvel must believe that this movie is going to develop a fan base quickly and that it will sustain momentum for sequels.
