The Arizona Diamondbacks are struggling in the early part of the 2014 season. The rumor mill starts early when your team struggles, and then you give the rumor mill something like the addition of the hiring of Tony LaRussa to the front office. You can say that it makes for some very interesting conversations. The biggest topic of conversation is second baseman Aaron Hill.
Hill is a solid baseball player, although this year he is struggling at the plate. His batting average currently is .257, which is twenty points below his career average. Hill has also shown a certain amount of power, having hit twenty plus home runs on three different seasons. This season is Hill is on a pace to hit double-digit home runs. The biggest challenge a team may have with Hill is that he is prone to injury, having averaged 120 games a season in his career.
The question is what team is willing to trade for a thirty-two year old second baseman that is injury prone. One team that may trade for Hill is the Toronto Blue Jays. They currently have a player that is playing very well. His name is Steve Tolleson. He is hitting forty points above his career batting average. Although Tolleson is hitting well right now, so is the rest of his team. Could Tolleson continue his hot hitting, or will the fact that he has never played more than twenty-nine games in one season.
You could include teams like the New York Yankees, but they are always in the talks of most trades. In the case of Aaron Hill, he probably will not be traded to the Yankees. The Yankees have several players that can play second base, one being Yangervis Solarte. He is a young player that is currently hitting over three-hundred.
Another team that could trade for Hill is the Oakland A’s. Although, the A’s have a very solid player in Eric Sogard. The A’s usually do not take on the expense that Hill brings with him. Sogard is also four years younger than Hill, and the A’s do not trade for older players.
As the summer continues, it will be interesting to see how the trades evolve. Aaron Hill is one of the players talked about but will the Diamondbacks trade him, and take a risk with potential minor league talent. Only Time will tell.
