The Value of Earning Your Good Name We have all heard of the disgruntled renter who posted a complaint about her landlord on Twitter who is being sued. This all has brought up the larger question of freedom of speech on the internet. Most people are missing the simple point about these matters it matters if the person writing the negative thing about a person or business believes they are telling the truth. Yes, a person could make a false accusation of a person or business. I do not believe this is slander unless the intent was only to damage the good name of the business or individual.
Many consumers become angry with those they conduct business because they naively made assumptions about the service or product they were receiving. Most businesses don’t make a serious attempt to clarify claims made when advertising or pointing out the limitations of the things they offer. This is not fraud on their part, just bad customer service.
Many of us want to get more for our money. We assume the nice man is a good landlord when he has done no credit check. We don’t read into that the landlord who does not do a credit check is a landlord who is not overly concerned about who he is renting to. He is then not overly concerned about maintaining the property. He may have tenets who are handy and do their own repairs grateful he does not invade their privacy by coming over. Other tenets may think he is a slum lord because wanted repairs are never made.
Point is one tenet may love this landlord for being hands off and another hate him. The law may have been broken if the landlord did neglect his properties to a serious degree. It may not have been broken at all if the needed repairs the landlord has failed to make are only superficial.
The truth of a tenet’s dislike of this landlord is subjective, as are any of the tenet fans that he may have. One can not sue people for having subjective opinions on matters. Business and individuals who do their best to act in an ethical manner create more clients that have positive subjective experiences. If a business is at fault they only preserve their good name if they correct the issue in a timely manner. If a business is not at fault it pays them to help the client or tenet without admitting responsibility just to create a happy customer out of a disgruntled one. People who complain the loudest also many times will give the honest provider of goods and services loud accolades as well.
