The world of MMA is a violent one, nobody will deny that fact, but it’s nowhere near as bad as the “human cockfighting” that John McCain once dubbed it. (phoenixnewtimes) In MMA the top company has become the Ultimate Fighting Championship, owned by the Fertitta brothers, they’ve become to the world of Mixed Martial Arts what the NFL is to football, what WWE is to pro wrestling, they’re the unquestioned king of the hill in their field. (wikipedia) When you think of the UFC typically certain fighters come to mind, Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, Anderson Silva, Royce Gracie, Dan Severn, as well as the Shamrock brothers are just a couple names that have achieved this level of notoriety. (bleacherreport) While there is certainly going to be some dispute over the following statement, possibly one of the most popular, most larger than life personality, and if not for a bout with Diverticulitis he could have gone down as the greatest fighter in the entire world of Mixed Martial Arts, at the very least in the heavyweight division, is Brock Lesnar. (espn) There has been a lot of news circulating about Lesnar lately, having become the only man to beat The Undertaker at WrestleMania and all, but something interesting came out yesterday, although you may not have heard much about it, seeing how it doesn’t really fit in well with the villainous persona he plays in the WWE. (mmafighting)
Brock made a call to Dana White recently, but it wasn’t for the reason you would typically expect, he wasn’t looking for another fight, not asking to start his UFC career over once again, instead he was calling on behalf of a friend, Pat Barry. (wikipedia) Barry had been released from the UFC after suffering too many losses, as a result he decided to go back into the world of kickboxing. He recently suffered another knockout defeat, leading his friend Lesnar to grow concerned for Barry’s health. (examiner) If anyone reaching out in fear that their friend could be in serious danger due to potential concussion issues, that person coming from either pro football or pro wrestling are going to carry quite a bit of weight. (philly) Lesnar has stated he doesn’t consider too many people his friend, but Barry is one of the few to earn that title, as a result he felt a need to contact White in the hopes that he could convince Pat to retire from combat sports, in order to protect his friend from himself. (mmaweekly) While this doesn’t fit the evil persona he’s cultivated in his WWE career, and part of his time in the Octagon, it shows a compassionate side to a monstrous behemoth of a man, and for his sake, and that of his friend, I hope that Dana White is capable of finding a way to get Pat Barry to step away from the fight game, before it’s too late.
