Living in a constant state of victimization is exhausting. It requires time, energy and dedication. All of these tools could be out to better use elsewhere. The key to having that freedom is to break the cycle of a victim mentality in your life. This task of course is not one for the faint of heart. It demands rigorous authenticity and a willingness to change fundamental ideas about yourself. If you feel that you are ready for this undertaking than these three steps may help you to achieve you goal.
It is impossible to heal a wound that you do not know you have. The first step to breaking free of a victim mentality is to recognize that you have one. This step requires that you take personal inventory. Look through the decisions you have made and where they based. Did you build a grand structure in your life only to pull it down on your own head? Have you often found yourself in doing this that are unhealthy for reasons you cannot explain? These are indicators that you must recognize to change.
2. Change It
Changing sounds simple. You just stop doing whatever it is that caused you pain. It of course is never that simple. Our behaviors are based in long standing belief systems. Most of which we have spent a good deal of time completely disconnecting our consciousness from. To change these patterns we must be willing to face the truth about ourselves. Why we do the things we do and how those actions direct our lives. This process is one serious dedication, I recommend going through it with a professional.
3. Do Not Reengage
Once you have done the footwork, and begun making different choices. The key is to continue on the path of healing. There will of course be temptation to reengage those negative patterns. They were comfortable to us, and this new way of life is not. The final step to breaking free of a victim mentality is to not return to that state of mind. Remind yourself every day that you are not a victim, choose every day to be an active participant in your own recovery. Doing this will allow for the positive changes to take hold and for you to experience a newfound freedom.
