During a large mating season in 2010, BP spilled around 170 million gallons of oil after their rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. The birds covered in oil could not float nor control their body temperature. Coral deep beneath the water’s surface were found dying as far as seven miles away from the spill. Scientists predicted that 17% of the dolphins studied in one of the worst areas affected by the oil were going to die. With the mating season compromised, several species drastically lost population. Many of those species fed others who population will decline due to lack of food.
More recently, BP caused another spill in Lake Michigan where more animals died. History has proven fish populations could be affected for decades due to oil spills. Such was the case for Exxon’s spill in 1989 and the herring population which has yet to bounce back from the decrease in population.
The spill in the gulf may cost BP up to 9.2 billion dollars which BP fought to appeal. That is just to clean up the oil. BP should have to pay for every resource needed to restore the gulf. They need to hire workers to clean up the mess at the wage of a hazmat professional. Wildlife clean-up professionals and veterinarians needed to save the animals have travel and accommodation expenses as well as their normal wages. There are supplies needed for such a clean-up such as wash basins, animal-safe soap, nets, and hazmat protection. Wildlife centers must concentrate on breeding and raising the species affected by the spill to level out their populations and restore balance to the ecosystem.
There is no definite cause for the spill but most of the possibilities are due to BP’s negligence. Despite this fact, when BP built an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico they assumed all responsibility for any accidents. This was a major environmental catastrophe. If BP ended up bankrupt after such a disaster it would still justify their need to cover all costs needed to make it right.
It is sad that BP can afford lawyers and multiple appeals to avoid responsibility while the environment suffers. Maybe they figure it temporarily hurts their image but people will forget the accident in time. They care not for the environment but for the green they can put into their bank accounts and shove into their pockets.
