As years have passed man has always had to rely on hunting and fishing to help provide for his family. The hunting and fishing of today is more recreational than the past. For many years man has relied upon different ways to hunt for meat to help provide for his family. In the earlier days the weapons of choice were spears, and bow and arrows. Hunters of today still use bow and arrows but also have a choice to use a more modern method known as firearms. These two methods of hunting have their advantages and disadvantages
The first difference a bow and arrow has with a firearm is the type of ammunition it uses. The ammo for a bow is a long slender arrow with a razor sharp broadhead that is propelled by the bow string when pulled back and released. Arrows are made up of different materials such as graphite, wood, fiberglass, and aluminum. The lighter the material, the faster it will travel through the air. While using a bow, precise accuracy and stability is needed, along with much dedication and practice to become a skilled shooter.
The rifle on the other hand, has a much different type of ammunition. The rifle is loaded with a cartridge filled with gunpowder and a lead tip. When the trigger is pulled a firing pin strikes the primer located on the end of the cartridge to ignite the gunpowder inside. This causes the lead tip to be projected out of the cartridge and down the barrel of the firearm. One fact that exists about the arrow and the bullet is that arrows can be used over and over again depending on the condition the arrow is in. Once the rifle is fired the bullet needs to be reloaded or completely replaced with a new one.
Another big difference in using these two types of hunting methods is the amount of time in the season hunters have to hunt. A bow hunters schedule for hunting season starts almost six weeks before rifle season opens. Bow season usually opens October first, and rifle season opens the third week of November. Bow hunters also have an advantage over rifle hunters, like getting the opportunity to hunt the animals before the gun hunters get the chance too. One of the many drawbacks with using a bow is the amount of limitations the archer has. For instance, a bow hunter can only shoot his prey within a certain range. Hunters who use a firearm have a range advantage over the bow hunter. Most hunters’ firearm of choice is a high-powered rifle, which can effectively kill an animal at two-hundred yards away. The reason a rifle hunter can effectively kill an animal at two hundred yards is because it is equipped with a scope. The scope enables the hunter to see an animal at a long distance.
Both methods of hunting take skill learned through many years of trial and error. Although the two methods are very different, the outcome of using either or is the same, and result in the taking of an animal.
