I used to drink bottled water, give it to my children, and even believe that Dasani and Aquafina, the local bottled waters from my state, and the water cooler at the office were safe to drink from. In fact, I thought they were good for me and safer than tap water.
I was an idiot and I admit it. I only hope that others will read this and change their minds as well. Tap water is safer and that’s a fact that hundreds of studies have proven. Here are the reasons you should never drink bottled water again and links to the studies to prove it.
How Much Bottled Water Do Americans Drink? This number is going to shock you. Backtotap.com states that the average American drinks 215 bottles of water per year. The current U.S. population according to US News is 317 million people. That’s over 68 billion bottles of water per year if my math is correct. The really horrible fact is that only 20 percent of the bottles used are recycled.
Not In Landfills: Think about how much space 68 billion plastic bottles would take up. Even if it all went into landfills (which it doesn’t), it’s a staggering amount of trash. According to a documentary called “Tapped,” there are places in the Pacific, Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Indian oceans that are twice the size of Texas that are nothing but swirling masses of water and plastic. Animals are dying and their digestive systems are full of, you guessed it, plastic. You can see real photos here. They are very disturbing, but may change your mind about drinking bottled water.
Where Does It Come From? Americans are led to believe, through commercials, clever marketing, and omission that their bottled water comes from beautiful mountain springs or far away glaciers. Pepsi and Coke, the makers of Dasani and Aquafina, get the water from municipal sources. That means, from lakes and rivers right here in the good old USA. According to CNN, Aquafina is basically tap water (except it isn’t monitored as well as the water you get from your tap). Dasani is no better. Feeling scammed yet?
Paying for Tap Water: What this all means is that you and I have been paying for tap water. Pepsi and Coke come in, drain lakes and rivers (in the US), create tons of plastics (which pollute and cause cancer and birth defects), and then charge us for the water that we could have turned on the faucet for. Stop buying what you have a right to have for free! Buy a water filter and a stainless steel thermos to take with you. One fourth of bottled water is tap water (Aquafina and Dasani), according to Earth Resource Foundation.
Cancer and Birth Defects: The plastic that you and I have been drinking from is killing our neighbors and may be killing us. Corpus Christi, Texas is one place where the bottles are made. People are dying from unusually high rates of cancer (80 percent higher than the rest of the state), breathing issues, and birth defects. This area is often referred to as Refinery Row. Robert Kizer, reports a three block area of 150 homes were 52 people have cancer. Still want your Aquafina or Dasani?
BPA: The hard plastic that water cooler at work is made from is even worse. Some scientists claim that no levels of BPA are safe and Americans are exposed to eight times the safe limit per day. Others claim there is no safe limit because the liver cannot process it. Thanks Coke and Pepsi. Hope you guys are mega rich while average Americans suffer and die! Not only have they lied about what we are drinking, they are polluting our water, charging us for it, and making us sick. Never buy bottled water again.
Tap Water Is Actually Safer: The documentary “Tapped,” also claims that tap water is safer because it is tested multiple times per day. This is a fact that you can check at any time with your local municipal water source. You can also find results online. Bottled water that is produced in your state and sold in your state is not regulated by the FDA at all. Bottled water that is sold across the country does it’s own testing and only one person at the FDA is overseeing all of it (plus has other responsibilities). Earth Resource Foundation states that bottled water does not have to list contaminants.
Recalls: Another fact that will scare you, is how many bottled water recalls there have been over the years. From 1990 to 2004 there were 11 recalls for chemical contamination and high fecal counts. The recalls haven’t ended either. This year, Tyler Mountain bottled water was recalled for E-Coli according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. These are just a few examples. There are countless others.
What Are We Doing? What are we thinking buying this stuff? Bottled water is the biggest scam of all time! It’s like charging people for air. It’s our planet; not Coke or Pepsi’s, but we are making them rich while our children are being slowly poisoned. What can you do about it? You can start by never buying a plastic bottle of water again. We are killing our neighbors every time we whip a dollar out of our pocket for an Aquafina, we are killing our planet with trash and pollution, and we are making Coke and Pepsi rich in the process. Ridiculous isn’t it? I hope you’re angry, shocked, and ready to make a change.
