In this article, we would like to focus on the mysteries surrounding the day when Jesus was actually born. To help us understand that event and its mysteries, let us look at the book of Luke 2V6-20 which reads as follows in the KJV:
“So it was that while they were there the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her first born son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn.
V8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, Lo, the Angel of the Lord came upon them and the glory of the Lord shone round about them and they were sore afraid. The Angel said unto them Fear not for I bring you good tidings of great which shall be to all men. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you, Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, Glory be to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, that the Shepherds said unto one another, Let us now go even unto Bathlehem and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord has made known unto us. And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the sayings which were told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen as it was told unto them.”
Imagine the Son of a President or King being born and placed in a manger and being wrapped in swaddling clothes? This will be news everywhere including on facebook, twitter and other social networks. Jesus was the Son of the King of kings and the Lord of lords but he was born and laid in a manger.
Now to help our understanding of the mysteries surrounding the birth of Jesus, we need to know what the terms “swaddling” and “manger” means.
Swaddling is the old age practice of wrapping babies in blankets/similar clothes to avoid movement of limbs. Research indicates that the advantage of swaddling is to help babies to sleep and to remain asleep. However, this can increase the risk of sudden infant death (SID) and the development of dysplasia of the hips.
Manager means a feeder that is made of curved stone, wood or metal and is used to hold food for the animals. They are used mostly in livestock raising.
From the above definitions, we see that both the clothes in which Jesus was wrapped in and the manger where he was laid had a huge risk of him contracting diseases through breathing the dirty air that was coming from the manger and this could have caused SID. Surely if this was just one of these natural babies, Mary and Joseph were supposed to have lost this babe, or else they were supposed to spend days in hospital. Over and above this risk, the place Jesus was born and placed to sleep had no honour, it was a shame in other words. However, this was done that it may be fulfilled as per Psalms 118v22 that the “the stone that was rejected by the builders became the chief cornerstone”. God defended and protected Jesus; he sustained his life and what a mystery that was. The bible says he is the same yesterday, today and forever. The same God who protected and defended Jesus is the same God who can also perform wonders/mysteries in your life. He never changes; he can still work a miracle in your life. Only if you can come unto him and he will give you rest and peace.
From our scripture reading above, we also noted that the Angel visited the Shepherds, shone around them and declared that he had brought good tidings of great joy which was to be to all people. The good tidings were that Jesus the Saviour was born. The Angel declared the Christmas day to the Shepherds. This angelic visitation and declaration was surely a mystery even unto the Shepherds. I am sure because they too did not have a full understanding of God’s plan, they wondered what manner of declaration that was. However, deep down in their hearts, they understood that there was a mystery which God would fully disclose, seeing that so many babies were born and such a thing had never happened before and it never happened thereafter. To this day we all celebrate Christmas. We should celebrate this with full understanding of what that means, which is that the Saviour was born. The Christmas was not declared by the Angels for just that day when Jesus was born, he was declared for us and even for the bodies that will exist in the year 4000. So anyone who shall come to Jesus in any time and generation shall experience the good of Christmas, ie, shall be saved.
Not only did the Angel visit Shepherds, but a whole crowd of the heavenly host came down to praise God saying Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace and goodwill toward man. The heavenly host and angels understood the mind of God. To them, they saw people who were oppressed by the devils being delivered, they saw the sick being healed, they saw those in sins being saved, they saw the plan advancing towards a season when it was going to be effective in the lives of people in all generations. That was a mystery which was worth celebrating. I want you to know that every time you celebrate Jesus’s birth, you agree with this heavenly host, you draw nigh the presence of God into your life. You attract into your life this power of peace and goodwill toward men, which is deliverance, healing, salvation and joy, among other.
The Shepherds did not keep the mystery unto themselves, they made it known unto others. The mystery being so good is not limited to a few. It should be published unto all men. You do well when you share these good news of the birth of Jesus to all men.
Finally the Shepherds returned glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen. The mystery of this mystery is that you do well when you praise God for the birth of Jesus. As detailed above, when you do that, God, Angels and the whole heavenly hosts become conscious about you.
