Love him or hate him, you have to admit that Justin Bieber sure knows how to draw attention. His first major hit entitled “Baby” featuring rapper Ludacris was released on YouTube back in early February 2010 and successfully launched his career. But how is that video doing four years after its release? Well let’s just say it never lost popularity. The music video for his song “Baby” has been steadily climbing in views since then and is now only about 10 million views shy of one billion! To put that in perspective, there has only been one other video ever to reach a billion views on YouTube, and that was Gangnam Style by Korean pop-singer Psy (Gangnam Style is nearing the 1.9 billion mark now). So it is by all means a very large achievement to reach a billion views.
Let’s put a billion views in perspective. “Baby” is 3 minutes and 45 seconds long, so if we assume that on average people watch half the video, or approximately 2 minutes worth of it for every view, then that would put us at near 2 billion minutes of time spent watching this video. 2 billion minutes works out to 3,805 years! Since the video has been out for just shy of 4 years that means that, on average, 951 years’ worth of time is spent watching “Baby” every year. In other words, if you were to go back to the time when Constantinople was still going strong and started watching “Baby” on repeat over and over until the 21st century, you would only spend the same amount of time watching the video as we do in an average year now!
“Baby” is not Bieber’s only extremely successful video, in fact he has 10 videos with over 100 million views and has brought in a total of 4.5 billion views from all his videos on YouTube combined. Since he’s been on YouTube for 4 years, that’s over a billion views a year! Not bad Justin, not bad at all.
