There are many instruction sources for raising children, and here are some Bible verses that offer basic guidelines for kids to behave. Education usually starts with a basic core curriculum. The first two verses here are from the Ten Commandments and The Golden Rule, which are like Bible 101 for raising children. Other verses offer solutions to help children and even parents behave. These verses are from the English Standard version of the Bible.
Honor Your Father and Mother
Exodus 21:12 is the 5th of the 10 Commandments which says “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” This basic verse should act as the foundation of good behavior for a child.
Nothing is guaranteed in life, as earthquakes can turn foundations upside down, and children have free will. However, continuous display of this verse in writing, speech, or actions can have great effects. Growing up I can remember “Home Sweet Home” and “Honor Your Father and Mother” placed on the refrigerator with magnets. It made us kids think about it.
The Golden Rule
Matthew 7:12 says “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” Known as the golden rule, this verse applies to the entire family and not just to children.
Children learn by example. Parents can learn from the Bible how to set a good example. If everyone practiced the Golden Rule our entire world would be well behaved. Biblical principles teach values and responsibility.
Proverbs 22:6 says “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” This verse tells to teach basic skills of how to live right or wrong. This combined with the golden rule lets children or even adults think about a path taken and how it will benefit them or others.
Instruction of The Lord
Ephesians 6:4 says “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. The New York Daily News reported in an article about the Nairobi Mall massacre in Kenya where a mother was being sought there for raising children to be terrorists.
Both fathers and mothers should understand the effect good or bad training can have. Bible verses are instruction of the Lord. When kids memorize Bible quotes, behavior should be better than learning about anger and hatred.
Proverbs 29:17 says “Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart.” There are other verses about discipline, but receiving rest and delight sounds like a great way to receive blessings happily ever after with children.
