Here are some best practices for that period of time when you’re out of work. It is assumed that you are looking for a job. However, you can fill up your time with other worthwhile activities while you wait for the call from your next employer.
Get in physical shape. You have some extra time on your hands. It is a good time to learn some new exercise and diet habits. I used the Internet to learn what I could do. The Internet has many sites offering to help you get from 0 to 5k. There are others with workouts for arms, abdomen, and legs.
Get in mental shape. You may also use that extra time to learn something new or to add skills related to your work that have come into being since you were in college or trade school. Use the library to find books that will help you. If you don’t want to work on job skills, you can read classic literature or learn music.
I have continued with studies toward a Ph.D. while I have been between jobs. Not everyone can do that. I would not be able to without financial assistance. However, there are a number of free resources available for improving one’s mind. A simple Internet search or trip to the library can be helpful.
Get your relationships in shape. The loss of income and other factors related to being without a job can produce great strain on family relationships. You can reduce the strain and stress by still having fun as a family. Find a park or a nature trail and enjoy time outdoors together. If finances allow, go out with your spouse for a cup of coffee. It is important to keep an open flow of communication in the family, and fun time together will help to do so.
Get in spiritual shape. Time off from work is also a good time to get in spiritual shape as well, which has the added benefit of also giving hope and reducing stress. Many Bibles contain daily reading plans. Churches often have free literature that provides daily devotions, a daily passage of scripture to read, and some guidance on how to pray. If you have fallen out of spiritual shape, it could be a good time to do what is necessary to have spiritual renewal.
Time out of work need not be a time of depression and despair. It can be a time to improve your life if you have the desire and are willing to put in the time to do so.
