My favorite way to watch TV these days is to binge-watch, and I highly recommend the practice. If you’re like me, you’ve missed out on some great TV shows simply because you weren’t paying attention. This list is light. This is the list you can use to scrub your brain after watching your darker favorites like Damages or House of Cards. Whew.
So grab your laptop or Kindle or iPad, and let’s get to it. Here are a few comedies and dramas you need to binge-watch while wrapped in your coziest blanket. Junk food is optional.
When You Want to Laugh
Freaks and Geeks – Where was I when this little gem aired? Oh, yeah — raising a three-year-old. I missed this one, and Oh. My. Goodness. It’s perfect. Freaks and Geeks will transport you back to your middle/high school years from the moment the theme song hits yours ears. The best part? You will learn to embrace your awkward years and wear them as a badge of honor. Dive back into your past, and come out as an honorary freak or geek. You decide.
Ugly Betty – Again. Where was I? That’s right — raising two kiddos. But this is one endearing and entertaining show. I love everything about it. Everything. As embarrassing as it sounds, I felt as though I lost a friend when it ended. You will laugh with/at Betty and Marc and Amanda. There are so many good lines back to back to back. Love the writing. Love the humor. Love Betty. And you will, too.
New Girl – I know this show is currently airing, but I only recently discovered it. This show made me laugh. Hard. By the time I got to Season 1, Episode 4 called “Naked”? I was in. I immediately made my husband watch, and we both laughed until we cried. Good times. The characters are awkwardly adorable, and they’ll remind you of people you know. Or they might remind you of yourself. This show is just plain fun.
When You Want to Embrace Your Inner Drama Queen
Friday Night Lights – I did NOT expect to love this show. But I did. All the small-town drama mixed with football and southern accents? It just worked for me in a surprising way. You’ll find yourself wrapped up in the gossip and relationship triangles, and you may have a hard time coming up for air once you press play. It’s addictive.
Brothers and Sisters – Drama, drama, and more drama. You will wish you had a bigger family, and then be grateful you don’t. You will watch the Walker family misunderstand each other and fight with each other. You will watch some more and realize your family drama is quite tame in comparison. You will also wonder what kind of family cell-phone plan the Walkers are using. For real.
Army Wives – Okay, I’m kind of embarrassed to include this one, but I jumped in late and got kind of hooked by this little Lifetime series. It’s not going to be the best show you’ve ever watched, but you can totally burn through the seasons while getting some chores or menial tasks done. And I may or may not have cried actual tears during some of the episodes.
Now, go, and get your binge-watch on!
