I’ve discovered many excellent TV show thanks to websites like Netflix and Hulu that make binge-watching possible. When I’m in the right mood, there’s nothing like a well-written TV show with a twisty, dark side.
Here’s a list to help you find the right shows to binge-watch during your next slot of serious down-time.
United States of Tara – This show is worth your time, and you’ll be sad when you get to the end. The United States of Tara, created by Diablo Cody, is about a woman named Tara who struggles with multiple personality disorder. Toni Collette’s performance is amazing, and you will root for her and her family as they struggle to find their way to stability. Go find this show, and commence binge-watching in 3-2-1 …
Dexter – Dexter is the strangest show you’ll ever love watching, and it will make you wonder whether or not you need therapy. Your reactions will scare even you as you empathize with a serial killer you know is wrong. Odd. Creepy. Engaging. Well written x 100.
Damages – Glenn Close’s character, Patty Hewes, will frighten you as you wonder what is happening in her head. You will squirm inside as you realize the full capacity of her evil-ness, and you will beg certain characters to make different choices. Serious, heavy duty stuff here. So, make sure you have a New Girl chaser ready before bed, or you’ll never sleep.
The Walking Dead – With a zombie/post-apocalyptic survival theme, The Walking Dead does an excellent job of mixing unbelievably difficult scenarios with ordinarily human ones throughout the character plot lines. You will cry when your favorites don’t survive, and you will also carefully lift your jaw off the floor when you watch the unthinkable unfold before your eyes. You will love The Walking Dead, and you will plan your own brand of survivalism as you watch the characters live out impossible situations.
House of Cards – Yowsa! This Netflix original series is D to the A-R-K. Truth be told, I had to take a break because it was so dark, and my dreams were turning weird on me. But Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright are amazing, as you would expect, and the Shakespearean quality of this show about politics is just too good to pass up.
Mad Men – Mad Men is like no show you’ve ever seen. You will watch with both awe and irritation as men dominate and women cower. You will feel the tension of life lived in a 1960 world, and it will be too much at times. You will hate Don Draper, and then you will feel bad for him. You will root for the women and then be irritated with them for not making better choices. Simply put, you will react. And you will want more, more, more.
What are you waiting for? Take your pick, and get watching!
