Falafel is a deep fried ball or patty made out of chickpeas, fava beans, or sometimes both. A traditional Middle Eastern item, usually served inside a pita and wrapped into a sandwich filled with lettuce, cabbage, pickles, tomatoes, onion, other pickled vegetables, hummus, and drizzled with a tahini based garlic sauce, this dish is sure to please your taste buds.
If you are a fan of falafel, or have never tried it but would like to, I have found 3 of the best falafel sandwiches I’ve ever tasted. All 3 restaurants offering these sandwiches are located in the Ann Arbor/Ypsi area and offer many other great dishes as well, but their falafel is the dish I just can’t help but keep coming back for!
1.) Haifa Falafel

Ann Arbor, MI. 48108
Open Mon – Thurs. 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Fri – Sat 10:00 AM – 11:00 PM
Sunday 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM
Haifa Falafel is a local, family owned Mediterranean restaurant located on Washtenaw Avenue in Ann Arbor. They serve the best falafel I have ever had anywhere, period. They also offer delivery or pickup, or you can eat inside their restaurant, which is nicely decorated with Middle Eastern decor and music. Their falafel sandwich comes with tahini, hummus, garlic spread, Haifa Sauce, tomatoes, onion, cucumbers, pickles, red and white cabbage, lettuce and carrots. For $8 or $9 you can get a combo at a great deal! A huge falafel sandwich, a side dish (choose from french fries, majadara, soup, tabbouli, or rice) and a drink. You can also order falafel balls. They come in a half dozen order for $2.49 or an order of a dozen for $3.49. This restaurant is pretty popular with the college kids in town and a great place to eat if you’re on a tight budget! They also offer daily $6.00 lunch specials until 1:30 PM. Sunday is their daily falafel plate lunch special. Thursday is their daily lunch special that comes with a sandwich and a drink, and Friday is their dozen falafel and hummus daily lunch special. For other daily lunch special items check their website. If you’re looking for the best falafel sandwich at a remarkable price, Haifa Falafel is where it’s at! *Vegans: Order falafel without the garlic sauce, it contains egg whites.
2.) Pita Kabob Grill
619 E. William St.
Ann Arbor, MI. 48104
Open Mon – Sat 10:30 AM – 11:50 PM
Sunday 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Pita Kabob Grill is a tiny little Mediterranean restaurant in downtown Ann Arbor on East William Street. The staff here is friendly and the food comes quickly. This restaurant is a great place to go if you are in a hurry or in the mood for carry out. You can also order online, but they do not offer delivery. Their falafel sandwich is the second best I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting. Their falafel sandwich is only one of several sandwiches they offer on their vegetarian sandwich menu. Pita Kabob’s falafel is made from garbanzo beans and is carefully rolled into a delicious pita with lettuce, tomato, turnip and pickles. You also have the choice to make it into a combo, which includes a drink and a side of your choice. Choose from french fries, rice, soup, yogurt, salad, cucumber salad, or hummus dip. Price range varies depending on which combo you get, or if you just want the sandwich by itself. Expect to pay anywhere from $6 to $11, but know that its worth every penny!
3.) Pita Pita Mediterranean Grill
2649 Washtenaw Ave.
Ypsilanti, MI. 48197
Open Mon – Sun 10:00 AM – 11:00 PM
Pita Pita is located on Washtenaw Avenue in Ypsilanti, and is not too far from Eastern Michigan University. Their falafel sandwich gives Haifa Falafel and Pita Kabob a pretty good run for their money, but I’d have to say its my third favorite of the three, but definitely still worth a try. Their prices tend to be a little cheaper, which is always a plus. Their restaurant is quiet and nicely decorated and the staff is pretty friendly. Its more laidback and less fast pace compared to the other two restaurants. Their falafel sandwich is rather simple, but still tasty and comes in small ($3.75) or large ($4.95) size and is rolled into a pita with lettuce, tomato and pickles. They also offer a falafel deluxe, small ($3.75) or large ($4.95) which features falafel, tabbouleh, and hummus. If you’re looking for a quiet place to sit down and eat falafel, Pita Pita is your best bet.
